But then, I might just be seeing things.\r\n\r\nLooking more at panel fit, there is a slight problem on the right side, where the doors meet. It can be seen in pictures #8 -11. Then, after seeing picture #115 of the right rocker and comparing it with picture #116 of the left side, it is clear that some adventure happened in the past. Almost the first thing I did was to drop down on to my back and search for the RF jack point damage. Imagine my surprise, and delight, to discover an effective repair instead of a crater. Nice!\r\n\r\nI would want a car like this to use, with no nervous apprehension about where it is parked, occasional gravel section and fresh tar from road repair. To me, rock chips, scratches, and dents caused by errant birds are part of the car' history. This car has all those reminders of past use. The paint, overall, is... well, blue. Viewed from ten feet, with a vehicle speed of ten mph, it is just fine. If you want to go to a regional Concours d'Elegance with this car, enjoy the show, but know your car will be in the parking lot, not on the green.\r\n\r\nPeople modify things based upon their agendas, skill set, motivation, time, and finances. The way I look at the car's cosmetic needs, I would be happy with a better fitting grille and a new t/l lens, so they matched. The hood is kind of tweaked, so the fit at each fender and the cowl is askew. Put the search for a new hood on the back burner and drive the car. A pair of bumpers come with the car, and can theoretically be restored. I have seen worse.\r\n\r\nThe interior is pretty nice. The front seats have been recovered, as has the dash. The dials are very clean and the clock works! The steering wheel wants that leather cover. The ventilation control levers move back-and-forth. The wipers work. The two front grab loops are missing, but their anchors are still mounted above the doors. I would want to replace the blue synthetic carpet with rubber mats, but that is a personal taste thing.\r\n\r\nThe trunk area needs some help. The metal work is fine, but it deserves new rubber matting. The jack and its wingnut are missing. The same for the tools and the tire hold down bar and wingbolt. The engine bay is acceptable, except the lid for the cold airbox wants the support bar. The spring that helps with the latch is broken; repros are readily available. Someone managed to break lose the captured studs that retain the radiator by its \"ears.\" Fred Flintstone created a couple of access ports to fish bolts through for fastening the ears. Not graceful, but it works, and more if the history of the car speaking to us.\r\n\r\nThe car started and died, Then, started and idled with a medium amount of smoke. No weird noises, a little lumpy at first but evening out after a minute. Warm restart was immediate with a nice idle. Due to recent hand surgery, I was not supposed to be using my left hand, so Zee Docktor demonstrated the car's excellent functional ability. Basically, it goes, it stops, and it goes around corners very well. The demonstration was conducted much more aggressively than I would have driven the car [with a witness/owner], so it is good he was driving. The suspension felt tight and precise, those huge tires have lots if bite, and the brakes haul it down in a straight line. A few minor details might be addressed. The exhaust seemed to bump the pan infrequently (felt like the front glasspack on the heat shield), there is a harmonic vibration that might be a loose center support bearing carrier, and the transmission complained (only twice) a tiny bit shifting down into second. The transmission noise is familiar to nearly all of us and is a cautionary reminder to be gentle on that downshift, especially with cold oil.\r\n\r\nThe only thing that really needs to be done, right now, is to adjust the doors to open and close easily. The right doors, especially, only close with force. Because of this, the passenger interior armrest has broken away at its front and middle attachment points. I neglected to wiggle the other three, but they might also be a little damaged.\r\n\r\nThe Seller is an open, honest, good-natured fellow who is clearly a motoring enthusiast. He might not be quite as obsessive-compulsive as I, but the way he treats his things suggests he is a little picky. And, that is a good thing. Just sitting in it gave me more warm fuzzies than a pitcher of Lemoncello! \nThe driving was a joy, the only downside being a lack of opportunities to really open it up and make the seller appropriately nervous ;^) Tight steering, firm, compliant ride, throaty exhaust and great visibility made me daydream about chasing other old Alfas through miles of Oregon back roads.\nAnother thing this car has going for it is the seller. He was Super gracious, accommodating and knowledgable. Everything he mentioned, from the improvements he\u2019s made to the mechanics he\u2019s had work on it, was met with approval from my Alfisti friends. We really did have a fabulous time hanging out with a true-blue car nut in the best tradition of old-school Oregon hospitality.\nIn regards to the car, my only \u201ccritiques\u201d are purely personal preferences. I actually think I\u2019d consider going back to the original wheel/tire size in order to lighten the steering a tad. It feels really planted now, but I think I\u2019d actually trade some grip for a smidge more playfulness. The other thing being the driving position which demonstrated what I\u2019ve always read about Alfa\u2019s classic \u201carms-out\u201d Italian driving position. \nBottom line, the car is as described and presented in the write-up and gallery, a fabulous example to drive while improving..or not.
