The bolt breaks and then the steering box moves around and clunks when you get all the way L or R. Usually putting a piece of pipe to add support and replacing bolt fixes this. He documented his restoration journey extensively on the website https://www.1988bmwm5.com and I\u2019m grateful for the stuff that he did.\r\n\r\nDuring my stewardship, the car has been totally babied, always garaged, never driven in the rain, never tracked, with some occasional weekend canyon carving, and the cloverleaf freeway entrance to I280-S that is always taken at a \u201cspirited\u201d pace. It is of course (still) a joy to drive, it is BMW 3-pedal analog its peak, and Blackie is always the unfailing collector of numerous thumbs-ups from freeway passerby.\r\n\r\nThe following service items were commissioned by me. OEM parts were always used when available.\r\nFan belts and cooling system hoses replaced \r\nNew Wizard Cooling aluminum radiator\r\nNew battery\r\nNew tires Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+ 225/50R16\r\nHood repair/repaint\r\nSteering box mount welded to frame\r\nIntake plenum re-powdercoated\r\nAC re-energized\r\nRear sway bar mounts replaced\r\nAxle boots, front strut mounts, thrust arms replaced\r\n\r\nIn April 2018, my neighbor sideswiped the hood while the car was parked and put a dent in the nose of the hood. The hood was repaired and repainted.\r\n\r\nThe photos do make the car look great, but there are a number of documented minor imperfections including rock chips, polisher burn, and scratches. The driver\u2019s side quarter panel and the hood have definitely been repainted, but the other sections appear to retain their original single-stage paint. The car is largely rust free, there is some surface rust near a rocker panel that looks like a poor jacking job.\r\n\r\nThe dash is beautiful and *almost* crack-free, there is one small crack that is hard to spot unless you went looking for it. The sunroof headliner is torn, there is some black tape patching up the tear. The radio is scratchy when the volume is turned, but the period-specific cassette deck is great and I eccentrically only play period specific music (in the tape deck - U2\u2019s The Joshua Tree).\r\n\r\nAt 196,000 miles and change, the car still drives amazingly. I would drive it to LA tomorrow without thinking about it. But it is also at the age where a timing chain redo and a top end or full rebuild are not bad considerations. I\u2019ve had 2 Blackstone analyses done and they are in the photo set. There\u2019s a thin oil leak that looks like it\u2019s coming from the drain plug. And there\u2019s a small seal leak in the differential that has been there since I\u2019ve owned the car. All it requires is a can of DeOxit or similar contact cleaner, sprayed liberally on the contacts of the rheostat (back of the volume knob). You need to remove a few phillips screws on the cover to get access to the back of the knob, but it's a 15 minute job. You don't even need to disconnect the radio harness.\r\n\r\nI disagree that these cars are expensive to repair. The engines are certainly more expensive to repair, no argument there, however the rest of the car shares a large percentage of its parts with all the other E28s so unless your toolbox is shaped like a check book they are not only very reasonable from a cost perspective, they are also simple to work on. This makes them the ideal enthusiasts car. I would also say that unlike most Pcars, and many other collector cars of this vintage for that matter, the E28 M5 owner is typically a roll your sleeves up and get familiar with the thing type of guy. This model's DNA has that code baked into it right from the factory. It's an engineering marvel whose appeal is strongest with engineering types who can relate to the execution, and want to embrace that aspect more than your average enthusiast does. It's one of the many qualities that makes these cars so special.\r\n\r\nRegarding the steering box mount, just to clear that up with some facts, this a common failure on this chassis which is often exacerbated by larger tires. There is a small u-shaped bracket of about 10ga steel which is inverted and welded to the top of the subframe. It locates a mount point on the steering box with a through-bolt and this weld area at the base of the bracket is where the failure typically occurs. Cornering forces strain the weld and it tears the u-shaped bracket away from the subframe, which then allows the steering box to move under load. There is a hole in the subframe whose purpose is to allow access to that through-bolt and by sliding a thickwall tube (aka dowel) of the correct length and diameter up through this hole and welding it to the subframe, and then using a much longer through-bolt, you are transferring the corner forces from the flimsy u-shaped bracket to the much stronger thickwalled tube. This can be done a couple ways but MWrench did it first and most elegantly since this method requires little disassembly of anything else.\r\n\r\nThis car looks amazing in the pics and I completely agree that the mileage is of little concern with proper maintenance on these cars. I only wish that BMW made every E28 M5 with a black interior. A guy in CA had access to the BMW Data and went through every E28 M5 VIN number to find the code for a black interior. That's how the 30 number was finally arrived at. \r\nThe reason this happened is because in 1988 these were $50,000+ cars and the US was going through a slow period. I had my own business then and remember. So BMW NA marketing asked BMW Germany if they could do something to make the car more unique? BMW basically put 30 black Canadian interiors in the car and did the same in Canada with 30 tans interiors. Easy peasy! This info came from a man I met that worked for BMW Marketing in VA at the time. He saw my black interior car at Hilton Head and came up to me and told me this story. We became friends and he even reached out to his former colleagues to verify this story. Just a chance meeting that solved a 20 year mystery. PO took very good care of this car and if he was suspicious of a chain failure (noise) I'm sure he would have done a chain and guide rebuild. CA has a very moderate climate so heat expansion and stress would be less than say Colorado. \r\nNever heard or seen oil pump problems on these engines. Mine runs 75 at start and 3000 rpm and above. Lowest it gets is about 25 in 95 degree Atlanta summer heat and traffic. They have oil coolers that kick in at high temp to cool that oil down adding to the longevity of a engine. You should make room for it. 1 of 30.
