I was living on Cape Cod in the 70's and had secured retail distribution rights for the Boston Globe from Eastham through Truro. I enjoyed the challenge of driving cars 1,000 miles a week for nearly no cost and at one point lucked into a 69 Cortina wagon at the end of a remote driveway where an English professor/writer was holed up to write a novel. The wagon was a left hand drive he had bought new while at Oxford and brought back to the states. It had 40K rust free miles on it but the automatic transmission had broken and he couldn't find anyone to fix it. I got it for $40 and promptly headed to my favorite old Yankee junkyard in Harwich. Sitting in a row were four 68-70 Cortinas, three with a front strut poking up through the rusted upper inner fender. Turns out that on the Cape, the humid salt air and Winter slush got into the sheet metal of the strut mount and ate it out in just a few years. With so few Cortinas sold locally I think all on the Cape were right there in front of me. Since no one was driving one (I never saw another on the road), no one was picking parts. Long story short I put another 60K miles on the wagon for nearly no cost by maintaining it with junkyard parts. Every time I changed the oil I would turn the used filter upside down over the fender strut mounts, half on each side. The simplicity of GM/Ford engineer Earle MacPherson's front end design meant I could pull about dozen nuts and bolts from a junkyard Cortina and walk out with struts, springs, disk brakes, control arms, antisway bar and steering linkage for $15. Two of us each carrying by a strut all in one piece. \n\nThe Lower Cape roads of the time were rally quality; narrow, winding and empty, especially at 5AM. I lived that life seven days a week for six years, ending around 7AM at Cahoon's Hollow to walk the beach.
