The posts snap off rather easily if you don't lift the cover off flush, slowly and have old, hard grommets. Rubber grommets are cheap, and I would suggest the new owner replace them. I did that on my bike, but luckily had the post which I was able to plastic weld back on. So much fun! One day I was riding in a new housing development and a cop saw I didn't have plates. He flicked on his cherries. I downshifted two gears and gave the throttle full twist. A long wheelie and a couple gear changes later and I was doing 80. I hopped off the street onto a trail never to see the cop again. I hid the bike in the woods, turned my shirt inside out and walked home. When I got home my mom asked where the bike was. I bought an 82 XL250R new from Woods Honda in Austin for $1495, but quickly traded it for the 82 XL500R. It was my sole transportation for most of my college years, and I rode the daylights out of it. To and from work, play, and school. Trail ridden any time I could. Prepped with knobbies and bark busters I raced it in the Texas State Championship Enduro Series. A big Mikuni, cam and SuperTrapp exhaust absolutely transformed the power delivery. Swapped road race rubber on and ran the Austin Aqua Festival Street Races for 3 years before the haters caused them to be shut down (along with the drag boat races on Town Lake). Bracket raced it at Temple Academy Little River drag strip repeatedly. The bike took a decade of ceaseless abuse and never stumbled once. It was absolutely bulletproof and could ride effortless wheelies while clutchlessly shifting second through fifth to about 70mph. I got more enjoyment out of that thumper than any of nearly 100 vehicles. If this was a 500, I would be in it to win it. That is not to poo poo this superb 250 which I had also owned. It is also the Swiss Army knife of mid size thumpers, supremely comfortable and rock solid reliable. \r\n\r\nGreat to see in this condition. The winner will get miles of smiles! The 250 is the keeper for me. The extra power in the 500 is nice on the road, but meaningless on loose gravel and single track, where the 250 really shines.
