Welcome to my auction of this very nice 1993 Volvo 940 Wagon. I will do my absolute best to represent this car as honestly as possible. Like many of you, I have traveled many miles on many occasions to see a car only to be disappointed once I got there. I don't want to be \u201cthat guy\u201d. I want anyone considering purchasing this car sight unseen to be able to bid with confidence. \n\nI recently purchased this car from the 72 year old son of the original owner. He inherited the car upon his fathers passing in 2007 and relocated the car from Maryland to his home in Michigan. The Son told me his father always had a company car and therefore this Volvo saw light duty while in his possession. This car was never a primary vehicle for the Son either. As a result, the car was spared a lot of the harsh winter driving and road salt during its life. The condition of the body and undercarriage support this claim. \n\nThe car is in excellent mechanical condition and has been well maintained throughout its life. It runs and drives extremely well. Every electrical and mechanical component works, including the air conditioning and cruise control. The steering and suspension are tight. The transmission shifts as it should and the overdrive functions properly. I drove the car home 250 miles on interstate highways at 70 MPH and it didn't miss a beat. I wouldn't hesitate to drive this car anywhere. \n\nOwners manuals in the glove box show evidence of the car being maintained at Timonium Volvo in Maryland. There is a hand written note showing the timing belt and water pump being replaced in November of 2001. The car had just 54,972 miles on it at that time. A sticker under the hood indicates the timing belt was changed again in 2011at 113,000 miles. \n\nThe Son of the original owner maintained the car very well and stated the following maintenance items were completed under his 48,000 miles of ownership.....\nTransmission Fluid was last changed at 78,000 miles (2008) \nBilstein Touring struts and shocks (2010) \nTiming Belt in October of 2011 @ 113,373 miles. \nFront and rear brake pads in 2014\nCAT-back exhaust in 2011\nOE Volvo radiator (2019)\nRear lift gate struts (2019)\nIPD Front splash pan (2022) \nFuel Pressure Regulator (2022)\n\nCosmetically the car is very nice condition for a nearly 30 year old car. There are no signs of any accidents or body work. It is rust free with the exception of some very minor surface rust that has started to form on the inside of the drivers side doors. I will post better pics of that soon. The only notable cosmetic flaws on the car are the dings on the rear doors, left front fender, and hood. I'm certain that a paintless dent repair shop could turn the car around easily if these bother you The leather interior is very nice as well. There are no cracks in the dash or door panels. The weather stripping looks like new. All the glass appears to be original to the car. \n\nPlease don't hesitate to ask questions. I will answer them to the best of my ability. The picture of the camshaft/ oil fill tells a lot. The center armrest cup holder is a nice option. The added height makes a more comfortable drive. Usually at this point the cup supports are broken or missing. Not here. The rear door panels don\u2019t have the usual seat belt buckle dents caused by closing the doors before the belt is retracted ( my kids were experts). As long as you don\u2019t expect Turbo performance this will be an enjoyable ride. This has the Volvo R-134 upgrade. It\u2019s a more expensive option than the Auto Parts store kits ( they work but this has more components). I\u2019ll comment on the AC control head, but not specific to this car but a tech tip. These were made by Alpine \r\nand they eventually suffer from solder migration on the circuit board. The part was overly expensive ( ($600 20 years ago) and Volvo didn\u2019t offer an exchange. It requires a little effort but is easily repaired. I never had one fail after the fix. The early versions had a slide out tray for 2 cups only in the front. Later ones had front and rear trays like this one. I recall these were the same for all 2, 7 and 9 series cars. The built in center booster seat was a factory option that you don't frequently see. This is one nice 940 and the base models always seemed to the most reliable with the fewest squeaks and rattles. Someone must have really wanted a traditional Volvo when this was new as the 850's were on fire in 1993.\n@Old_Ned I worked at 7535 Timonium Volvo from 1986 to 2001 and never broke that pin. It even happened to me but I have a little bit of an excuse. On a rainy day on a 100 mile highway drive in a 760 turbo I stopped for gas and went in the convenience store for a snack. When the engine is shut off the coolant temp will rise because there's no circulation and the old and weak heater valve snapped while sitting and because of the rain I didn't notice the coolant that must have been on the ground under the engine. Back on the highway and six miles later my first clue was I heard a rattle I thought might be in the drive train, I let off the gas and it went away but when back on the gas I realized it was engine ping. I then saw that the temp gauge was pegged, pulled to the shoulder, opened the hood and the engine was crackling hot and the plug wires were burning. Besides no warning light the temp gauge on 700s is partially blocked by the steering wheel. I now replace coolant resevoirs with low coolant sensor type and wire it to an unused warning light slot on the dash plus I tie in an audible tone piece used in computers I think so there will be a tone and a light both as soon as the resevoir is empty.\r\nOn the console lid/cupholder I found more broken latches than pins, there is enough play in the hinge that can be exacerbated by loose mounting screws and it's easy to miss the slot and break the latch.\r\nI've been through probably a half dozen 700/900 wagons for hauling and towing, IMO 200/700/900s are near the top of best cars ever. A true box for hauling more than you would imagine.\r\nAn aside is that volvo-ned is a guru to listen and turn to for help.\r\nThe car listed here looks awesome for a thirty year old. Should bring a good price for seller and buyer can't go wrong. I had an issue with the cooling system and heater hoses & took the Volvo to an independant radiator shop in upstate NY & they quoted me over 1k for repairs including replacing the radiator. I decided to pass on their work & the owner swore I would ruin the engine if I drove it any further.\n\nI left, added a coolant mix with more to spare & took it to a Volvo dealer 45 minutes away in Albany. They provided me with a loaner car for the day & they called me at 3 in the afternoon & said: \"Your car is ready and done.\" I responded and said: \"Wait a minute ~ I thought you would call me with an estimate before starting the work. \"He responded: \"When you dropped off the car you signed the service agreement that stipulated any minor issues found under two hundred dollars would simply be carried out.\"\n\nIncredulous that the car was ready at a much lower number than I anticipated, he explained that they replaced the heater hoses along with the tapered compression brass sleeves for the in & out of the heater core. The plastic radiator is not an easily answered question but, after about 10 years I\u2019d always recommend it before any long trips. \nTypically they crack at the top hose connection but taking the clamp loose to look could be a bad decision. As far as the fan clutch ( not on this car, they\u2019re electric) you can find out if they work because of the roar they make when they lock up. On a hot engine, on a warm day, hold the throttle above 2000rpm while parked. I usually do it with the hood open and manually work the throttle. After 3 or 4 minutes (depending on temperature) the plastic fan on the water pump should get really loud and start moving lots of air. That\u2019s a good one. On the pre-LH 2.4/ EZ 116k cars the distributor contains a Hall Effect sensor. The oil seals (2 o-rings and a tiny shaft seal)failed over time and damaged the insulation on the wires to the crystal. Expensive to repair. Your engine has no sensor, that\u2019s done by the Engine Speed Sensor on the top of the bell housing.
