It does have a leak, which I noticed while the car was up on the lift for the underbody photos for this very auction and it is mentioned in the advert. You can see the fluid spots on the hose in photos 177 and 178. I looked around while it was on the lift and I couldn't really identify the exact source. But I chatted with a TVR specialist mechanic and got some possible info about that. That hose is the oil hose from the oil pump to the oil cooler. They can weep from the swage crimping at the fitting at the end of the hose. Alternatively, I\u2019m sure the hose itself could have a leak. At this point in time, a failed hose is the best info I have as to the most likely cause of the leak. The taillamp cover can be removed by cutting through the silicone sealant and then reseal it, or one might be able to remove the lamps from the inside and get the insect out at that time. I just haven\u2019t gotten around to messing with that yet.\r\nYes, the car was designed during the Peter Wheeler era, and it is intentionally designed so that a tall person can fit. The footwell is very long. In fact, I think a taller person would be just fine in there. In some light and in some photos it might look silver but trust me the car has a strong greenish hue to it. The AJP8 is one of the best engines I have been fortunate enough to drive. Having owned or spent serious seat time in the majority of super cars from the 90s to 2010s (my favourite eta), I can speak from experience that with the steel crank there is nothing like it on the market. Definitely a Jekyl and Hyde car, a comfortable GT with a big trunk and back seats (kids or one flexible adult) that turns into a snarling animal at the drop of a hat if you require. As far as reliability a well-maintained unit will outlast its keeper. The \u201cissues\u201d with the Cerbera came down to the electrics. Mostly small gremlins which by this point have been ironed out by owners that have kept them serviced properly over 25+ years of ownership. There\u2019s a wealth of information online from incredibly helpful owners and techs for anyone thinking about taking this home. Like any car with a genuine race-bred engine, then need to be driven regularly. The ones left to stand that haven\u2019t been looked after are the ones to avoid. Mileage not important, maintenance is the key. On the pro side: the AJP was enormously ambitious for a small shop and a testament to their skill and chutzpah; it was designed by an experienced team; it cut its teeth in racing; it's a monster in that fiberglass body. On the other: the AJP was tested as a racing engine first-and-foremost, and it did have plenty of kinks and issues for the road-going owner. From the anecdotes I've heard, care and feeding were generally not insignificant (and may not be in the future).\r\n\r\nAll that said: serious, sustained, and recent service is what you want to see in a Cerbera. A dealership probably is not going to want to work on this. Because dealerships do tons of the same cars repeatedly, and they look up parts and specs via the VIN and do what the computer says. They don\u2019t have the time to figure out any issues with unique cars. So don\u2019t bother with dealerships of any manufacturer.\r\nWhat you want to do is find a good independent shop with mechanics who work on all types of cars. Ideally, someone who has experience or specialized in unique cars or race cars, exotics, stuff like that, and ideally a shop that is accustomed to dealing with exotic cars just so that they will treat it nicer, like storing it indoors, that sort of thing.\r\nI personally have had the car serviced here in the Dallas area at a local independent shop. Photo # 233. Keep in mind that it is a car and any good mechanic can take a look and figure things out. My mechanic commented on how simple the car is built. When you first show up every mechanic in the shop will come over to see the car and talk to you. Obviously a TVR expert would be better, but that does not mean an American mechanic can not work on it. They have seen tons of cars and they all have the same basic components.\r\nThe hardest part is you just have to find a mechanic who is willing to spend some time either looking through the Workshop Manual or diagnosing the problem using their own smarts instead of \u201cthe computer says to replace this part\u201d or maybe talking with you. You, as the owner, will very likely be in touch with other TVR owners and on the internet groups, and can thus provide sources for parts to the mechanic because he may not know where to find them. A quick search on the owner\u2019s groups or the old forums and you will find info that other people have posted in the past, so you can go to the mechanic with a good idea of what the issue might be.\r\nAlso, the TVR community is very tight knit and can help point in the right direction.\r\nI have the Workshop Manual and there are a handful of sources in the UK for parts. TVR memories! I first toured the TVR factory in Blackpool back in the late 1970s. The hand constructed nature was similar but different to what was happening in the Morgan factory, only smaller. The cars were pushed around in a circle rather than Morgan pushing them downhill from building to building. Next TVR joy came from attending the \r\n\"Griffith Growl\" at Gaydon, UK. This was a meeting of about 125 TVR Griffiths along with about 25 Chimaeras. Now the guttural wail of them arriving in groups of 10 or 15 was more than memorable! I finally made the leap and bought a 1974 TVR 2500M with its TR6 engine. Lots of good points and also some issues unique to cottage industry build. But I already owned a Morgan so I was used to the idiosyncrasies which are just part of the joy of the hobby. \r\nThis TVR Cerebra will bring a lot of joy to the winner of this auction. This car has had the mark2 headlights mod, which is what the later Cerberas looked like, after around 2000 or so when the Tuscan came out with the individual lights. As @BR459 mentioned, converting the headlights from the mark1 style to the mark2 style was a popular mod back in the early years. This was fairly easy to do since the cars are fiberglass. My understanding, from reading the forums back in the days, is that often times these cars would get stone chips, since they\u2019re so low, and owner\u2019s would respray the font of the car. It turned out to be a simple issue and a quick/easy fix. Since that pulley is there, and the AC button is there, and the air vents of course are there, you could retrofit an AC system back onto the car. Many parts like the AC compressor and condenser are available online. But, to be clear, there are a lot of parts you would have to get like the brackets and piping, and the compressor and condenser can be expensive. Regular UK gasoline is 95 octane, but most owners use Premium Shell V Power which is close to 100 octane. Some versions of the engine in this car had a switch to tell the car whether you were using Regular gasoline or not. US, Premium is 93, so way below UK Regular. \r\n\r\nA US mechanic apparently said that the car was simple, and in some ways they are, but they are also very complicated. Most features rely on a control box. The lights for instance. There is no CANBUS or multiplex wiring, but neither is there just a simple wire from the light switch via the fuse board to the bulb. There is a control box in between. They were made in house by TVR. They are now old, and they fail often. There are only 2 specialists in the UK who can repair them, so when they fail, you have to remove them, send them to the UK, wait for them to be repaired and mailed back to you, and you can't use the car until that happens. There is a separate control box for just about everything from lights to doors, which open electrically, to the electric windows which have to drop electrically before the door will open. \r\n\r\nThese cars are very fault prone. They were unreliable when they were new, because they were hand built in tiny numbers with parts from other vehicle manufacturers, sometimes left as standard, sometimes modified by TVR, combined with TVR's own homemade parts, and none of the cars were tested in the same way that Ford, GM or Toyota etc. test their cars before they go on sale to the public. The lack of reliability is a big part of why TVR went out of business in 2006.\r\n\r\nThis car had a major inspection and work done in England before it was shipped to the US and 300 miles later, it has faults. That's what you get with these cars.\r\n\r\nThe problem is getting the parts. Many are obsolete, so it's ebay or tracking down which Ford or GM (usually) they came from, which are generally European models, not sold in the US, or breakers yards in the UK. Those breakers know those old parts are rare, so they are expensive, and then you have to ship them.\r\n\r\nThe motor is a V8, but it sounds like a 4 because it's a flatplane crank and it only makes about 360 hp. But for the benefit of others, I would just say that one can think of it a few ways:\r\n\u2022\tThese are older cars, and when trying to keep an old AC system working one part leaks, you fix that and another part leaks, etc. I have gone through this with some other older cars. The lack of AC is one thing you don\u2019t have to worry about maintaining.\r\n\u2022\tI don\u2019t see most people using this car every day. It\u2019s more of a fun weekend toy, so most people would be enjoying a fun drive rather than sitting in traffic to work with the AC on. Let the wind do the work and listen to the sounds.\r\n\u2022\tRolling the windows down an inch or so sucks out some hot air and cuts down on the buffeting.\r\n\u2022\tAlso you can always retrofit a brand new system. The text below I copy/pasted from an earlier reply a few days ago, which obviously you have seen but maybe some of the newer people have not. Here\u2019s my earlier reply:\r\n\r\nThis particular car used to be equipped with AC but not any longer. The air conditioning system was removed by a prior owner. However, since this car used to have AC, it does have the pulley, which you can see at the bottom front of the engine in photo # 143 and 144, this is the pulley that would normally have a belt to drive the AC compressor which would sit in the valley of the V. Since that pulley is there, and the AC button is there, and the air vents of course are there, you could retrofit an AC system back onto the car. Many parts like the AC compressor and condenser are available online. But, to be clear, there are a lot of parts you would have to get like the brackets and piping, and the compressor and condenser can be expensive. I am not sure how much work that would be.\r\nAlternatively, and what might be easier, if you really wanted to retrofit the AC back in there, would be to get a full and complete system from a company that makes entire AC systems to retrofit onto classic cars, hot rods, kit cars, etc., such as Vintage Air. They have a \u201cbuilder series\u201d where you can pick which parts you need. This might be a good option since the TVR already has the vents and the button, etc. Plus you would have an entirely new system, instead of fixing one thing and then the next thing on a 25 year old AC system.\r\nIn the UK, they don\u2019t even have or need AC in their houses, so it\u2019s not hard to imagine why one of the previous owners chose to remove it. Against a friend's Yamaha R1, with a rolling start, there was nothing between them and given more space the Cerbie would've kicked its ass too :-) It smelt of glue and I kept running out of gas as the gauge had a habit of lying, but what fun. It cost me my license too at one point - cycling to work in British weather wasn't much fun. A few years later I bought a later model 4.5 and it just wasn't the same. In my experience, these cars don't ride particularly well on the 18s - they were a popular upgrade but they can tram-line and follow ruts in the road. I think the 17\" wheels from the earliest of the 4.5s look fantastic and are a nice compromise.
