Later, when the Twin Cam Specials came out they could be had with either a 4 or a 5 speed, however the vast majority were 5-speeds. I agree with the restorer of this one that it depends on how you intend to use the car. If just to run around on country roads then the 4-speed is perfectly fine and in fact the linkage to the transmission is simpler and shifting feels a little more direct. Conversely, if you ever intend to take it out on an interstate (please enjoy the eye-level view of the hubs on the wheels of an 18-wheeler or a lifted pickup), then the 5-speed is more desirable simply because it reduces engine revs about 10% in top gear compared to the 4-speed and thus cruises a little less frantically with less acoustic load. My comments are based on having owned both flavors with over 100,000 miles with a 5-speed. Finally, I always say the only rational reason to own a Lotus is to drive it!
