I want to explain the mileage better... I bought the car in 1996, it had ~120k miles on it at that point and needed some mechanical work and some paintwork. My dad was a certified mechanic and I was a teenager, together we took the engine apart to the point that the turbocharger, head, valves, cam, intake, exhaust and pistons\r\nwere out on the workbench. We cleaned everything up, replaced the rings,\r\nseals, bearings, and turbocharger. Polished the valves, balanced the\r\npistons/connecting rod assembly, cleaned up the interface between the head\r\nand the intake and exhaust manifolds to improve airflow. Basically everything was optimized\r\nfor airflow and performance much better than what a mass produced factory engine would\r\never see. With 536 of these cars made with the variable nozzle\r\nturbo I always saw this as a collector car and treated it that way. This\r\nvehicle used the strongest manual trans the Getrag 568 w/ 3.85 ratio, biggest brake\r\npackage, biggest sway bars, biggest wheels that use a directional pumper\r\ndesign to pull airflow through and cool the brakes on the racetrack. The\r\nShelby package is really a track package for performance/appearance and it looks the\r\npart. It weighs ~ 3,000 lbs. With the VNT engine you are not\r\nwaiting for boost to come on, it is there and fun to drive.\r\n\r\nSo since 1996 everything that wears was been refreshed, then I had it repainted at the dealership due to typical clear coat peel and general wear. Since then it has\r\nbeen babied as a garage queen. I put about 30k miles on it since all the\r\nwork was done, so it drives like it looks. The odometer quit working, so I replaced it with one with more mileage (you can see this in the service records). So actual mileage is ~150k. I can only hope the next owner takes care of the car how I have. It is a variable nozzle turbo, basically it acts like a small turbo at low speeds and adjusts to a large turbo at high speeds, the nozzles inside the turbocharger gradually adjust to optimize torque across the RPM band and greatly reduce lag, in fact there is no wastgate, boost is controlled by computer adjusting the vanes. Before I purchased this Daytona I drove a couple of Turbo II (intercooled turbo Daytonas) and a Turbo III (16 valve intercooled turbo Daytona). The driving feel is VERY different between these powertrains. Most turbos start to build boost and torque around 3,500 RPM and it tends to come on somewhat gradually, for the Turbo III, probably closer to 4,000 RPM and up was the 'Fun Zone'. In my mind this is a blast on a race track, but for a street car I like low RPM torque (that is where I spend my time), this is where the Turbo IV (VNT) really shines. Boost and fun come on low in the RPM band and it hits hard. During my VNT test drive I recall accidentally spinning the tires when boost came on at part throttle, I had my mom and owner in the car with me, I was very surprised/embarrassed.. To me, low end torque is more fun than an engine that needs high RPM to make power. So for 99% of my driving I shift at 2,500 RPM, no need to rev it up any higher. In fact the highest I have ever revved is 5,000 RPM as you might notice in the driving video I posted. I feel that high RPM causes unnecessary stress on an engine. Not needed in this case to have fun. I did test it once after a coolant system flush by clamping the upper rad hose in order to increase pressure and burp all the air out. The gauge went to the 75% mark.
