I have driven two, and while my R500 was very quick, these were even firmer planted to the road and felt very very fast.\r\n\r\nThese rigs are extremely comfortable and carry folks in limousine level space, at least in the second row.\r\n\r\nOnly issue with these are build quality. The materials were somewhat Chrysler like, though the A/C system was US derived and first rate. Be sure to budget accordingly for fairly regular issues to occur. Mine lost its tranny at 57K miles, and $8,000 later it was corrected. Good news that it was done on this already, by a very good shop that worked on my R500 as well. Things like liftgate cylinders, suspension, etc. pop up. And tuneups on the big 6.3 with the way it was shoehorned in can be costly. \r\n\r\nThat being said, the sheer rarity of the rig makes it highly collectible, and like any collectible car, it just needs love on a regular basis. This was the renaissance period of ingenuity for Mercedes Benz / AMG collaboration in the mid 2000's. Gravitating away from the M113 and 722.6 - the most robust drivetrain in modern history for Mercedes to this pairing was quite the demise for brand reliability.\r\n\r\nThe M156 engine is an amazing technological accomplishment for the era. The quad cam design came with its flaws, most of which have manifested themselves by this point in time. Critics will point out head bolts as the red herring, but what needs to be examined closely are the valve covers, cam lifters and buckets. If you hear a rattle, prepare for top end work and don't ignore it as a dropped valve equals game over for that motor. \r\n\r\nThe 722.9 transmission- which was thankfully already addressed is another area in need of attention. By revision VGS2, valve body replacements were no longer necessary for the conductor plate/speed sensor failures. Drive it in limp mode and say goodbye to your torque converter- necessitating complete replacement which may have happened here.\r\n\r\nWhat a beautiful vehicle- This will go down in history as the most displacement for a \"minivan\" - quite the pinnacle for the AMG.\r\n\r\nWith the 100k + miles, I would enjoy this until it needs a rebuild. I am the 2nd owner and have owned mine for 2 years, purchased it at 190K miles. Prior to my ownership, $23K total was spent on the vehicle maintenance across 14 years. While not quite at the comfort level of S-class of the time period, the quality of build was there.\r\nI rebuilt the engine at 193K miles. Up until rebuild, it was on original headbolts and while they were worn, they were not at imminent risk of breaking. I rebuilt the engine because it was time, it developed a small oil leak and it turned out a piston ring had a crack. The air suspension had 2 airbags fail the last 2 years so I replaced them along with a new pump. Original transmission still going strong. I spent $33K for the rebuild (all MB parts, some black series or SLS parts where I would have better longevity) to get this to a state where I can drive this for another near 200K miles, and the rebuild was done by an independent shop run by a AMG master mechanic who used to take care of Rick Hendrick\u2019s MB/AMG vehicles. The recall inspection went fine for mine with no repair required. By the way, 2 other owners I know of have R63\u2019s with over 200K miles. The 250K+ mi one has had an engine replacement, the 200K+ mi one has original engine but with tranny work done.\r\nWhy did I buy this and spend the money on the rebuild? I needed a family hauler that had 3 rows where the 3rd row can actually seat adults. I enjoy driving this over any other 3 row vehicle. I like that it is comfortable, reliable, and not depreciating. I plan to keep it for a while, until kids are out of the house. I could have bought a new Escalade or similar luxury level 3 row vehicle and have spent more, but after 10 years that new vehicle would have depreciated to $10K.
