The impossible to find chrome pillars covers are in good shape, suggesting no one ever tried to pry them off when they didn't understand how the fasteners worked. It's possible the windshield is original and just never needed to be replaced.\r\n\r\nThe underhood components aren't all that rusty, suggesting it was stored indoors for a good part of the car's life. \r\n\r\nIt's running. Finding a running type-75 is difficult, because the costs to keep them running often times will outweigh the value. Someone was either single, rich, or had a very, very, very understanding spouse.\r\n\r\nThere is a video on YouTube where someone is restoring a nearly identical Type-75, and the owner discusses the work required to find and replace the rubber seam strip that goes around the beltline. That video would be useful when it comes to restoring the car.\r\n\r\nI suspect the wheels were replaced to find tires, since the OEM tire sizes are impossible to find in a name brand tire. Hat-tip for the Giugiaro designed tires. I met Fabrizio Giugiaro many years ago. \r\n\r\nThe old gearbox in this model had transmission gears that are nearly impossible to find now. I suspect addressing the transmission issues required extensive research and phone calls to find some small parts.\r\n\r\nThe windshield looks good. It's hard to see the degree of corrosion without removing the body. Spyder Cars in the UK used to sell an upgraded Elite chassis, but I no longer see the chassis for sale on their website. It's possible Spyder would still make and sell an upgraded chassis, however. Contrary to another posters conjecture, vacuum is not in any way an indication of the condition of the frame. \r\n \r\nBe very, very, wary of an east coast early Lotus Elite frame. Lotus used moisture trapping felt between the frame and body (as another poster mentioned). So, they unfortunately rust in places that can\u2019t be seen. Also, the frame is alarmingly thin and very easily compromised since it gets its strength from the shape of the steel more than the thickness. I have four of these from the Eastern states. I disassembled one all the way to the ground and another down to the chassis. One, still complete car might be ok (can\u2019t see everything), but the other three frames are shot. That\u2019s my experience with Lotus Elite frames in cars I actually own today. \r\n\r\nOther things that gave me pause\u2026\r\nWhy only one comment about the oil burning engine? The top of the chassis rusts where the foam sits, not the bottom so it\u2019s not visible. The clunking at the rear over bumps is something I am also familiar with. Typically the four drive shaft U/Joints take a real beating as Lotus used them as the upper suspension link and they are subjected to constant lateral loads whenever the car goes over bumps, something the U/J bearing is not ideally suited to. I l so doubt the great brakes are working, very common for the wheel cylinders to leak fluid all over the shoes. All that being said it is still a very rare car, even rarer in that it\u2019s essentially complete and running \ud83d\ude02. Not the only early four seater Lotus but on the upside the timing belt, water pump, hoses, pretty much everything is 100 times easier than on the Esprit!
