Probably a little of both. The two most notorious items are the water pump itself and the expansion tank. The pump for an early model impeller design failure and the tank likes to split at the seams. The whole tank assembly is plastic and snaps into another plastic plate that also holds the automatic transmission cooling valve, which likes to break inside the housing. It all seems needlessly complicated but, it\u2019s easily replaced and is really nothing to be afraid of. It does a great job cooling one of the best designed engines in modern history. The cooling system failing is most common cause of shortened engine life as engine sensitive to overheating event.\r\n Replacing the entire cooling system is less than a 1 day project. Bleeding out the air adding coolant back in is the trickiest part. FCP Euro sells a kit containing all parts for about $750. Always use only BMW antifreeze for corrosion minimization. Specifically; The radiator will fail with age or with use. The attach points between the end tanks and the fins. Part of changing the entire cooling system every 100,000 miles or about 7-8 years is also changing the serpentine belt tensioner whose bearing freezes up, the belt idler pulley for same reason and the belts themselves. Having owned several BMWs I can tell you that if you are good at mechanically fixing something, it might be all right, but when I was in college I didn\u2019t have the money for that! This will also go outside of the range of money that I had during college I\u2019m sure! This is a great example of an E 46 and if it went for the current amount, it will be a steal. I just turned 25 and when previously I'd be obsessed over a nice German convertible like this, now I'm looking at cars like the new Prius plug-in hybrid and I'm getting excited over not having to spend on gas going to and from work. Sure, it's not an enthusiast's car but it's gonna save me from spending enthusiast money when I don't have that right now. \r\n\r\nGive it some time, think of a business idea, and get working on it. Keep browsing the market and who knows what you'll get. They changed the number of ribs on the AC belt (5 on early, 4 on later) - that's it. \n\nCount your ribs (you can see them from the top of the engine), and you'll know which kit to get should you decide you want to replace everything. Unfortunately, the crappy plastic cooling system is on all m5x E46s.\n\nRegardless of what you decide to do - flush the coolant.
