One of our BaT members asked me about the Vertex transmission that I installed, and I thought this might be useful information to share. It turns out there is another \u201csealed for life\u201d bearing set up in the 996 \u2013 its on the upper pinion shaft of the Getrag manual transmission. Recall that this \u201csealed for life\u201d bearing design is blamed for the IMS bearing failures in the engines. Apparently, this was a popular idea in the late 90\u2019s.\nIn the transmission, a failing pinion shaft bearing will cause a whining noise that follows road speed, more prominent at higher speeds. \n\nI looked into rebuilding the transmission myself (which I have done on 901 boxes) but it requires a 20 ton press and the bearings and synchro\u2019s would have cost me almost $2000. \n\nAt that point I decided to buy and install a Vertex re-manufactured gearbox. Vertex changes the sealed bearings to proper gear oil lubed bearings, replaces all wear items, does all the set up and reseals the box. Also, it is interesting that they recommend a 50/50 blend of synthetic ATF and synthetic 75/80 gear lube. As mentioned in the listing, this car has an Aasco aluminum flywheel in place of the dual mass factory flywheel. I did this because of the performance advantages of the aluminum flywheel. Rather than adding power, I wanted to make the most of the power I have. Plus the aluminum flywheel actually cost less than a dual mass. \n\nBy reducing the rotating mass of the flywheel, the engine is able to rev quicker and transfer more power to the wheels. This results in better performance, and as I mentioned in the driving video, better \u201cseat of the pants\u201d acceleration. \n\nThe downside of the lighter flywheel is that there is less ability to maintain engine \u201cmomentum\u201d when the clutch is engaged. The engagement is more digital than analogue, and it is easier to stall the car. It takes about 30 minutes to adapt to it and then you are good. The other thing to get used to is that the heavy dual mass flywheel would mask noises from the transmission that are noticeable at idle. You will hear a rattling noise from the tranny at idle when warm that was always there, but you didn\u2019t hear it with the dual mass flywheel. Nothing wrong, just a noise that is now noticeable.\n\nOverall, I would do it again as the performance gain outweighs any inconvenience. I just wanted to make clear the presence of the aluminum flywheel and what comes with it. \n\nThe other big plus is that with a little parts bin shopping we were able to find a clutch disc with about 40% more surface area than the stock disc. For some reason, the stock disc only covers about 60% of the available area of the pressure plate and flywheel. We found a disc that utilizes all the area. The story I was told is that this set \u201cfell off the back of the truck\u201d on the way back to the factory from the cleaners. Wear them as you do concour prep, at Cars and Coffee or make them interesting wall art.
