These cars are great drivers, but you really want to buy one where all the maintenance has been done or factor in what will need to be done. When all the preventative maintenance is done... these cars are just right - enough power, reasonably analog, fairly light, pretty easy to work on, fun, still modern looking, and quite possibly the high point of the three series.\n\nAbout the rear impact, if the rear frame rails were bent... you could see it in the picture showing the spare tire. They look okay from what is shown - although they can't be fully seen. As others have noted, if you don't know the maintenance history of an E46, then plan on - shocks/struts, end links, CCV, radiator, thermostat, water pump, upper/lower hose, pulleys, belts, spark plugs, driveline fluids, etc. You can DIY all of this, but the parts will add up to a few grand. In the end, you will be left with a very fine driving car in one of BMWs best platforms. When you start the car you have to press down the clutch pedal to do so and then you turn the key to start the car. Now this wasn\u2019t all communicating so the car couldn\u2019t be started. The internals of the steering collum was causing this problem so BMW replaced that under warranty. The steering wheel was not replaced and only the electrical components of the ignition system within the steering collum.\r\n\r\n# There are jumper cables in the spare wheel as that\u2019s where I store them rather than having them rolling around the trunk. If your wondering, i\u2019ve never used them and they came with the car when I bought it.\r\n\r\n# The spare wheel tire isn\u2019t muddy, it\u2019s the lubricant from when the tire was put on the wheel. The wheel has never been used and it\u2019s a full size alloy.\r\n\r\nEverything else your question on the engine is in full working order and the car runs beautifully.
