The front end is in need of alignment as mentioned in the write up and was a little bit looss, but it is 56 years old. The car appears to be unmolested and fairly original a far as my untrained eye can tell. I think the seller has represented the car as I saw it. Still, they should add pictures of the underside as requested by others. The reason I passed on the car is because it is a coupe and folding my long body and legs up to get in and out was not easy. If it were a convertible I would have taken a much closer look. First, the original standard engine cast iron exhaust manifold! Most owners immediately tossed these for headers. Second, factory air box on carbs connected to original air filter housing. No K&N filters here. Frame, photo #47 you can see the crossmember under the radiator-still has the red oxide paint on. Photo #46, if you zoom in on the chain tensioner you see 1/2\" of thread proud of the lock nut. This is an indication that the chain and sprockets are in good condition. Head probably hasn't been excessively machined. Engines appear to turn at a constant speed but in reality they pulse. Slightly slow down as they come up on compression and speed up on power stroke. At 3500rpm this is a 7Khz frequency. Most new cars, BMW, Audi/VW, Porsche, use twin mass flywheels to decouple the engine from the power train to eliminate this. Older BMW's and Alfas had a rubber coupler between the trans and driveshaft. Lotus may have used rotoflex couplings for cost reasons but it resulted in a very smooth power train. \r\n\r\nI my opinion, CV's for race cars. Also good for cars that sit for long periods, this seems to distort the couplers, causing short life. I put a set of rotoflex couplings on when I bought it. Never changed them, always checked them. My biggest problem was starters, new starter every 6 months, new ring gear every year. Previous owner had bumped the compression and the starter struggled even tho it always started by third rotation. \r\n\r\nOver the years have restored a S4 Big Valve (Canadian import, rusty, new frame), \"66 Lotus Cortina (way easier than an elan). Currently restoring a '71 S4 Big Valve FHC that was totaled in '73, spent years as a big pile of parts in a garage. Mechanics are perfect, needed a new body.\r\n\r\nI never said CV joints were unreliable, I have an '80 BMW 528i with original joints and 400K miles on them, one repack and new boots. I was commenting on Noise, Vibration, and Harshness and I find a CV conversion introduces a drive line frequency that isn't there with the rotoflex couplings. A friend bought a S3 SE with a set of CV axles. One CV was developing too much play. No parts. Had to buy a new set of axles from R&D Ent.
