Wikipedia notes: \"The main advantage of a torsion bar suspension are soft ride due to elasticity of the bar, easy adjustability of right height, and small profile along the width of the vehicle.\" In this late 50's engineering VW managed to give the car an amazing ride without needing advanced computer controlled air pump suspension. When I take a friend for a ride, I try to find a route that goes over railroad tracks. It is an amazing experience in a 57 year old, short wheel base, car. I recommend anyone trying to understand this car, especially those who's initial reaction to its design was not positive, watch this video. My ownership approach, especially since Lee Hedges was such a help in locating the car, was to preserve its originality the extent I could while maximizing safe driving. So I had the brakes fully renewed, engine rebuilt, gas tank and lines carefully inspected and fixed as needed. Other things, even if upgrading would be my usual approach, I tried to leave original even if it was a little rough. It is only original once. I did personalize it a little, but only with things that could be returned to original very very easy. The little tachometer is just sitting on a rubber pad and held on by a Velcro strap, for example. It can be removed in 2 minutes. When I was at a show I was told by one fellow that the type 34 NEVER came with whitewall tires, for example. That can be quickly reversed, of course, but it turns out he was wrong. See photo. Mine is a Lotus white '68 that lived in Europe for many years before being exported to Victoria, BC. That rear 3/4 view is simply stunning with it's slim C-pillar, it's huge greenhouse and it's gorgeous round tail lights. I had been thinking about them since that time and finally managed to buy mine about 10 years ago after pestering the owner for a couple of years. About 10 seconds into my test drive I realized that this was no ordinary VW variant - it was SO smooth and SO quiet! No wonder it was VW's most expensive and therefore least successful model of that era! I have some advertising brochures from that time that show a beautiful couple with their Gucci luggage and a cute 4 yr old in the back, heading off on a glorious holiday in the French Riviera (OK, I don't actually know where they were going). \r\nMine also has the original houndstooth inserts which everyone in the P-Car world has to have in their early cars these days. \r\nAnyway, they are absolutely wonderful cars - I have had lots of similar vintage German air cooled vehicles and this Type 34 remains my favourite. And for my own peace of mind, I had the front disc brakes redone new (the calipers were not repairable or I would have preferred to rebuild). The rear brakes were carefully cleaned and tested and were in great shape. I had made a great friend in Mike Hope, a real master air-cooled mechanic. Trained in Germany, among other amazing accomplishments. He found some dubious repairs made to the engine and decided to rebuild the motor himself. It has about 4,000 miles on it since it was fully restored to like new condition - just about broken in you could say. Mike pulled the shift tube, and cleaned and lubed it, but determined the transmission (transaxle) needed no other care than new oil. I have driven it with confidence ever since, and I have had only one problem. It would not start after sitting in the garage for more than a month. I did simple testing and could tell it was not getting gas. Checking that there were no plugs in the fuel line, I removed the mechanical fuel pump. I replaced it with fully rebuilt one I had ordered. It came with really detailed instructions. The car turned over for awhile to get gas in the line, and then started right up. I sent the original fuel pump (a Pierburg pump) in to be rebuilt (new diaphragm and so on). It is carefully wrapped up and among a few spare parts that go with the car. It has started right up ever since. But, other than fun drives which is usually taking a friend for a ride, and a loop of about 20 miles I drive alone to keep the car working well, I only drive the car to car shows. The furthest car show was a vintage VW show in Port Townsend, which is about 45 miles from my home. So 90 miles round trip. In know its probably bragging, but the car one \"best type 3.\" There is a picture of a small plaque/trophy sitting the roof of he car in the gallery. Back to your question - earlier this summer I sold a nice boat to someone I only just met. It was a great boat I'd had since new in 1997., and I know more about boats than I do cars. He wanted to travel immediately up to Canada to visit some family North of Vancouver Island. He wanted to know, as you have asked, will the boat do OK on a long trip just as it is. I said with confidence, \"you bet.\" He called me three weeks later to tell me that he just had the time of his life on that boat. But I don't think I slept well for those three weeks. That was a boat and I am more comfortable with my boating knowledge. To you I think it best to say, I have absolutely no reason to think the trip to Bend, OR, would not be a piece of cake for this car. But I would rest easier if you drove it for a few months and got a sense of how well it runs and make your own decision. It definitely likes to run. Not quite sure what you are asking, but the engine is a 1600, dual port, flat type3 engine. BaT confirms it is a numbers matching engine. 5. Turn signals work and cancel. 6. I have looked for a real VW wood-look veneer for 12 years with no success. Others may know more. It is my understanding that under the veneer is simply a painted metal dash in the Castillian Yellow body color. I have been tempted to simply remove the plastic veneer and go with the painted dash which I would like better. But, I am trying to keep things original at first, and over time it became unimportant in the enjoyment of the car. I did buy a nice clean glove box door on Ebay which is in with the spare parts should someone want to go the painted route. VW was going to end production of the beetle (Type1) once the Type 3 was under production. The beetle was the base chassis for the Type 14 and its production end would have ended the Type 14 as well. But when VW announced the end of the beetle, there was a public push back and a new popularity of the car (like new coke and old coke). When VW decided to continue the beetle after all, that continued the Type 14 already in larger production. The Type 34 never took the Type 14s place in regular production and continued to be hand built at the Karmann factory and remained the most expensive VW by a good margin as a result. That sealed its fate and VW phased it out never going into full production or producing the convertible version that had been in the plan from the beginning. You described it as \"stock,\" but many collectors would call it unmodified or simply original. The saying goes that it is only original once. You might find it interesting that the type 14 Karmann Ghia was not originally designed by Ghia, but rather by Virgil Exner an American designer for work he did for Chrysler that became what would now be called a concept car. Ghia took his design and made it fit a small chassis as one of the several designs it pitched to VW for the new type 3 line of cars. Turned out they like Exner's design best. Exner agreed to this, apparently after the fact, and was later known as being a friend of the head of Ghia. He also received a free Karmann Ghia, the first one imported to Michigan where he lived. In contrast, the type 34 was fully designed by Ghia, lead designer was Sergio Sartorelli. I happen to like both designs a lot, but the type 34 is a much better car. Bigger, quieter, faster and rides like a modern luxury car as suited its touring style. I really like the huge amount of glass and light the design provides.
