That will damage the cam drive mechanism. There is no crank pulley on these engines, so don't go that way. There's a small inspection port on the right rear of the crankcase where you can access the flywheel. Use a large screwdriver to try to turn it over using the flywheel teeth instead.\n\nThat said, as someone who has one of these and just went through a major rebuild, I would pull the heads and the valve covers inside the V before doing anything else. That will give you a clear idea of what's going on in there. Do it wrong or rush it or just start cranking and it's $60-80,000 for a rebuild. Seriously. Don't take any chances.\n\nAnd I have to say that even with high-speed gears, this really isn't an easy 75 MPH cruiser. That's awfully fast even with taller gears. It's probably much happier at 60-65. Remember that those rods are 12 inches long and use babbit; you don't want them thrashing around in there at 3500 RPM for very long. You also have 1933 brakes and suspension, so more speed isn't really a great idea. Be smart and be safe.\n\nA wonderful car that will be a superb tour car but will take quite a bit of time and money to get it there. Do it right and you'll have a superior car. The displacement is the only variable and it probably doesn't make much difference when it comes to power output. In the Lincoln world, this is acceptable and not really a demerit when it comes to value (\"matching numbers\" is thankfully not a big deal at this level). This car does have correct iron heads (later heads are aluminum) which many will argue are a better choice just from a longevity standpoint. It also has the correct squared-off exhaust manifolds rather than the later round ones, so I'm guessing that most of the parts on this car aside from the crankcase and maybe the blocks came from the original 1933 KA 382 cubic inch V12 engine. My Lincoln collectors always ask me if it is a numbers matching car. The Cadillac guys are very keen on making sure the car has the correct engine. I have found that the Bentley world does not much care. I have restored many many senior classic car engines of the 1930's in my 47 years of doing this. Including a dozen or so 414 Lincoln engines. I have rebuilt some of the Lincoln V8 engines, but I have never rebuilt a 1932 KB or either of the 1933 fork and blade engines (KA or KB engines), so here I have no knowledge. I assume the rods and the crankshaft are different between a 382 KA 1933 engine and the 414 later engines. The cylinder bores on a fork and blade engine are directly opposed to one another. On the 414 engine, they are offset the width of a rod. Could it be possible that this car's entire engine is a 1936 414 cube inch engine with 1933 heads, manifolds, etc? That's not a secret. They use the same bottom end. You may be confusing it with the 445 cubic inch version used in the 1932-1933 KB which did use fork-and-blade connecting rods. But there's no question that the 382 in this car is directly interchangeable with a later 414 with no modifications required to the car or the engine itself. If they had re-stamped the number (a practice which should not be done and which I find fraudulent) you never would know that it had been swapped from a visual inspection. And if they used the original blocks from the original 1933 engine, it would be completely identical save for the numbers stamped on the side. It is certainly possible, as you point out, that this is a complete 414 engine from 1936, but again, it's not significantly different from the 382 other than the diameter of the pistons and oil squirters on the valve lifters. I don't view such a swap as a demerit and in a car that's going to be driven, the added cubes might be very welcome.\r\n\r\nAs to whether it matters financially, it really comes down to the car. A mid-market car like this, no, it's not usually an issue. If it had a custom body or was historically significant, sure, it could be a factor. But in sub-six-figure pre-war cars, I've found that the numbers have little influence on value. This isn't the Corvette or Ferrari market (thank God) or even the Duesenberg/Rolls-Royce market and functionality is often prized over \"matching numbers.\" Having been a dealer for 25 years and having thousands of cars pass through my hands, including more than a few K, KA, KB Lincolns, plus my involvement in the hobby as an owner, my experience has been that if the engine is correct and it's not an investment-grade car, the numbers are much less critical. Hell, there are a whole lot of cars out there built from nothingness (floor sweepings, as my friend calls them) that still command strong prices. I hate injecting \"matching numbers\" into markets where they're not critical--it really takes the fun out of it.\r\n\r\nRemember, the whole matching numbers thing was only created to ascertain which optional Corvette engine was installed originally, but then it got way out of hand. Applying it to cars where there was only one engine choice doesn't really help the situation, although I certainly understand why a lot of people do it. \r\n\r\nI don't think we should cloud someone else's auction with speculation other than to say the car has a correct engine, but it is not the original engine. The car was not modified to accommodate this engine and without the numbers stamped on the side, even an expert would have a hard time discerning it from the original without disassembly. Functionally, this car will drive like a 1933 Lincoln KA. It looks like a 1933 Lincoln KA under the hood. It will use 1933 Lincoln KA parts. All service information applicable to a 1933 Lincoln KA applies here. There are no nasty mechanical surprises for a new owner (well, not because of the later engine anyway).
