It appears to be in good shape overall. Replacing the engine was pretty common back in the day. When something went wrong it was less expensive to get another engine then to fix the original one. As was said earlier in the comments, mechanics were not always skilled enough to repair the twin overhead cam engine and they were sometimes less then honest in what they charged for. I was charged for a rebore of the cylinders and later found out that there was no rebore done to the block. And original parts would sometimes disappear off the car during a mechanical service. Very difficult to tell that until later on and impossible to prove. Still most sports car drivers have similar stories and yet we soldier on enjoying the cars. All parts are available for XKs.
