These modes apply both to charging the car and driving. I\u2019ll try to explain: \r\n \r\nStandard: Battery charges to 90% of total capacity. The top 10% is left \u201cempty\u201d. The bottom 10% is full, but hidden from the range estimate on the car\u2019s screens. When new, the Roadster would display approximately 188 miles in Standard mode. \r\n\r\nRange: Range mode allows a user to charge the battery to the full 100% capacity, and when driving, unlocks the bottom 10% that is unavailable in Standard mode. If charged and driven in Range mode, the Roadster has full access to the 100% capacity and would have displayed about 240-245 miles when new. Range mode also pre-cools the battery using power from the wall so that so that less cooling is needed while driving, thereby extending range. However, motor power is also limited by 50% so you can\u2019t accidentally chew through energy. If you have charged in Standard mode, and immediately switch to Range before driving, you\u2019d probably see about ~210 estimated miles.\r\n\r\nPerformance: Performance mode charges the battery to the full 100% and allows the battery pack to run at a higher temperature. This reduces the overall long term life of the battery pack but improves the ability of the cells to rapidly release energy, resulting in quicker acceleration. In this mode, the bottom 10% of the battery is also hidden from the mileage estimates in the car, just like Standard. \r\n\r\nStorage mode is fairly self explanatory. It\u2019s for when the car is going to be stored for 2 weeks or more. It will allow the cooling system to maintain the optimum battery temperatures for long term storage. When the state of charge drops to something like 20%, the car will start charging to top itself up to 50% or so and continue the same process. \r\n\r\nIn practice, I like to charge and drive my Roadster in Standard mode. On the rare occasion I find myself running low on energy, I can switch to Range mode which unlocks that bottom 10%, giving me another 20 or so miles of driving. \r\n\r\nLastly, I will mention that the small LCD screen on photo #30 can be toggled using a button on the steering column. Press that button to display either the odometer, or your \u201cIdeal\u201d predicted driving range. \u201cIdeal\u201d is based on what was at the time, the EPA\u2019s 2-cycle test including city and HW driving. As others have said, this tends to be somewhat optimistic but not exceedingly so. On the touchscreen to the left of the steering wheel, a user can toggle between seeing this \u201cIdeal\u201d range or an instantaneously calculated range based on your last 5, 10 or I think 15 miles of driving. To me though, this instantaneous estimate isn\u2019t much use because if a driver just chills out, your future mileage will never be based on your past driving. \r\n\r\nI hope this all is helpful to prospective buyers.
