I ran my DHC without any with no ill effects but to each his/her own. Re: the top. It was cold that day and I could only get it so tight. That said, I've never actually used the top [which is essentially new] so it may be that some adjustments are needed for a tighter fit. Tonneau is perfecto. IBLBCfan asks about the lumbar support bladders. These are a readily available item that I had inserted when the interior was fitted. Some have characterized the 4/4 handling as lighter and more responsive but I can't confirm that. The Plus4s transmission [commonly and affectionately known as a Moss box] is a rather robust and heavy beast also derived from the 1930s. the combination of the two gives the driver a decidedly vintage feel. The engine in this 4/4 is of English Ford origin that has been upgraded to 1600gt spec and would likely have a rev limit of 7500 and much less torque than its Plus4 cousin. The transmission in the 4/4 is known as a Dagenham unit, is fully synchroed and shifts beautifully and smoothly. In overall performance, the Plus4 probably has a slight horsepower advantage giving top speed of 105mph and the4/4 around 100 mph. The 4/4, because its lighter, will be a bit more nimble in braking and turns. California. I started with my own, which I acquired about 15 years ago from Dennis at Morgan West, by accident. I was looking for a nice 4/4 but they were too rare, and too dear. So, I also wanted, for some reason, a Westfield 11, and he happened to have one. I wish I had paid only a few thou for it, but, well, I paid too much (so what else is new?), though I did discover that the chassis was perfectly straight, and it had a very expensive Longman cylinder head that would prove to be quite useful in the future. I drove it until the top rings divorced the pistons, then rebuilt it as a 125 HP 1380 with a Datsun 5 speed and a nice TranX LSD. Along the way I became very comfortable with the Westy's mechanicals and basic design, and developed a following of other Westy owners and the importer. I also prepped (built, really) the Westfield 11 that went to the magazines for evaluation, where it didn't break, and brought great reviews and smiles from the various editors. One magazine put nearly 1000 miles on the thing in a single week. Another was so reluctant that they didn't make the car available for return for three weeks. Now, I build them for friends, usually in RHD, with dual master cylinders and a bias bar, 125 HP 1380s, and the proper clutch type LSD. I also use specific dampers and settings that work well with the original type Dunlop vintage race tires in 4.50X15 and 5.00X15 to give the replica original handling and performance. My personal W11 is a bit ugly and shop worn, but it is mechanically superb, and is quite reliable. It also held its own against a Ferrari 500 TRC in a drag race at a vintage rally a few years ago. \r\n\r\nI also own an early Morgan +8, which replaced my Renault R5 Turbo that I owned for 34 years. I always wanted a Morgan, and I can't own everything at once (and I would have loved to keep that special, built for me by the factory R5Turbo), but I am getting older, and this was the only time I get to own a Morgan of the type I really wanted, so... Now I am putting some negative camber in the front end, and a set of tubular dampers in the rear. The old nail is coming along quite well. \r\n\r\nI think that we share a love of Lancias (Dad had an Appia), and everything Zagato (especially that Bristol powered Zagato that I saw at Monterey). Your taste is impeccable. \r\nOh, and I NEVER would have sold that Lynx... Funny, as I get older, I think that I am getting a bit more radical. My first choices for my next collectable were a tie between a RHD, RH shifted Superformance GT 40 and a Lynx/Proteus D Type, or maybe their alloy body C Type, but none were to be found..
