They were able to upgrade the interior that they had to cheap out on for the car's debut in '89 due to cost overruns. And that re-do included ditching the low-brow motorized seat belts for dual airbags. \n\nAt the same time, the engine got a power increase from 210 to the 230 noted here. And...then Ford killed it off completely, leaving only the 4.6 V8 as the semi-performance Thunderbird. \n\nI used to comb the newspaper classifieds and Auto Trader looking for one in the late '90s, but even then they were very hard to come by. I also thought I'd prefer the 5-speed manual, but the automatic actually works just great according to a few owners I've chatted up over the years. For those unaware, a boosted engine (in those days anyway) would accelerate more quickly with an automatic, as there wasn't a drop-off in pressure between shifts. Also, the Mazda-sourced (?) 5-speed that Ford used behind the supercharged 3.8 wasn't known to be especially robust. \n\nWhat a lovely example, with a factory sunroof even! The only options that I didn\u2019t have on mine were the ABS with rears discs and CD Premium Sound. The MN-12 Thunderbird/Cougar/Mark VIII Fords are highly underrated since unlike other rear drive coupes they have independent rear suspension like the Mustang Cobra. Basically a gentleman\u2019s Mustang.\r\nAs sales of these started to decline due to the popularity of SUV\u2019s, 97 being the final year (apparently a SVT version was planned for 98 if the model received a reprieve) Ford started to de content some features on the 96-97 Bird and Cougar models. (Thanks Jacques Nassar). The gauge cluster on those years removed the oil pressure and volt gauges. Also fewer option and trim packages were offered. Until a couple of years ago you could fine them reasonably priced but now their value seems to be increasing particularly the SC version. Interesting shape, great powertrain with the SC, even the NA 4.6 chipped, the autos and manuals will MOVE. The Batmobile-esque front clip is very cool, great gas mileage as long as you took it easy, and engaging the cruise control at 110 on Texas highways was steady. Seats are comfortable, rear seats surprisingly large for a 2-door, and a mammoth trunk. \r\nI'd buy this car in a second, but have sworn off red cars.
