Vancouver would have had a very small local feudal aristocracy back then, and I expect a Stutz would have been a pretty heterodox choice for one of them. British Columbia had only changed to Left Hand Drive and driving on the right side of the road four years earlier in 1922. Who the hell would think that it was a viable business plan to sell Stutz cars in late 1920s Vancouver? \r\n\r\nThe city directories for Vancouver are available online for all the years of my interest, so I had a peek. https://bccd.vpl.ca/index.html The surname \u201cCameron\u201d is just too common to be easily traced, even if just picking out the Camerons who lived in fancy neighbourhoods. So I can\u2019t easily track the first owner of this car. \r\n\r\nBut the Stutz dealership story in Vancouver is very easily traced, and it\u2019s pretty interesting (to me at least). \r\n\r\nIt looks like the Stutz venture was a one-man band that was run for four years from 1926 (the year this car was sold) up to 1929, by a guy named Weston Higbie (sometimes appearing as Western Higbie). \r\n\r\nIt looks like Mr. Higbie found his way out to Vancouver from Montreal by 1922, where he found work in management at a wholesale tobacco firm downtown. It looks like he bailed on that job, and started the \u201cStutz Motor Sales Ltd.\u201d firm in 1926, operating out of the same dealership showroom as REO Motors at 1308 Granville Street. That is the building immediately beside the old Yale Hotel that mostly still stands today, for Vancouverites following along here. It was two buildings North of the (later notorious) Cecil Hotel. I found a picture of that REO dealership here, purportedly taken in 1926: https://www.vancouverneon.com/images3/hist-granville/cecil1926.jpg\r\n\r\nThe main building in that image is the Cecil Hotel, but you can see the REO dealership in the building at the far left of the photo, with what might be a few display cars that show in the windows of the second floor. The Yale Hotel is the much taller brick wall at the extreme left of the photo. \r\n\r\nSo that\u2019s a photo of the place where the car in this auction (or at least its chassis), was originally sold. \r\n\r\nThe Stutz franchise seemed pretty fragile for Mr. Higbie, with an apparent pattern of being run cheaply out of the back offices of several more established local dealerships and garages. So if Mr. Cameron did in fact buy two Stutz Black Hawks in 1926, then I expect that he must have immediately become Mr. Higbie\u2019s best friend and best customer. \r\n\r\nIn 1927, Mr. Higbie moved his franchise to operate out of the local Falcon-Knight automobile dealership (a make that I had never heard of before today), which was located a few doors down at 1396 Granville. That deal didn\u2019t last long, and the next year in 1928 Mr. Higbie had moved the Stutz dealership to the Champion Garage at 1305 West Broadway. And the pattern continued, so that the next year in 1929 Higbie moved his Stutz dealership to a shop called Jordan Motors at 1327 Granville Street. \r\n\r\nIn 1930 the Stutz dealership disappeared altogether from the city directory, although Jordan Motors still existed for another year. In 1931 its address was listed as \u201cvacant\u201d in the city directory. \r\n\r\nSo in light of that pretty flaky and short-term Stutz \u201cdistribution network\u201d that ever existed in Vancouver, it\u2019s pretty interesting that a second Stutz engine from 1927 was found that replaced this car\u2019s Duesenberg engine swap after WWII. It must have been pretty slim pickens for Stutz parts in the Vancouver area at any time, much less 15+ years after Mr. Higbie had closed up shop for the last time. \r\n\r\nMr. Higbie seems to have landed on his feet again after the Stutz sales gig collapsed. He started running a cigar store downtown in 1929 during his last year selling Stutz, so I guess he could see the writing on the wall at that point. By 1934 he was listed in the city directory as manager of the Stanley Park Shipyards, and I see that same year he was elected Staff Captain at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club in the RVYC\u2019s online history. Two years later in 1936, he bought land in a deal that ended up getting him sued all the way up to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1944, and at some intervening date he had bought himself a small hotel/bar in North Vancouver: https://www.canlii.org/en/ca/scc/doc/1944/1944canlii29/1944canlii29.html\r\n\r\nMr. Higbie sounds like a pretty interesting character in the Wild West of Vancouver 100 years ago. I imagine him as the sort of guy that might have made a memorable protagonist in a Sinclair Lewis novel. \r\n\r\nI hope @pannhorstclassics can tell us more about the original owner of this car, Mr. Cameron, now that we know all about the guy who originally sold it to him.\r\n\r\nI need this car like I need a hole in my head. Did the Stutz already have the Duesenberg engine & they refurbished it??\r\n\r\nThat's not what I was lead to believe. My understanding is Tim bought the frame & engine separately and they paired them together.\r\n\r\nMy Dad definitely was involved in the transmission (came from a local wrecker of city busses!) & built the body.\r\n\r\nAll participants have long passed so no 1st hand reflections can be recorded.\r\nTim was also builder of a Fraser Nash chain gang replica made from bits & pieces of original parts. Maybe someone in that community has some memories?\r\nHe was also very involved in the Vincent motorcycle club & at one time I believe president. I do remember the very last Vincent ever produced sitting in a crate in his garage.
