Definitely pre Alejandro de Tomaso's ownership beginning in 1976, which was a disaster for the company. He wanted to make a Maserati \"for the common man.\" AKA The Biturbo. Talk about a quantum shift in target market! Yes, as I said, the TC has elements of style from the Biturbo (which basically caused Maserati to withdraw from the North American market for ten years) but precious little else. The TC uses a shortened Dodge Daytona chassis and suspension, like this one it sports a Mitsubishi engine, not the Maserati made twin turbo based on the Citroen design (Merak) found in the Biturbo. Not exactly Ghibli grade stuff. If you're basing your assumptions on the Biturbo, at best, it was a very watered down Maserati and the TC even more so. As for current use of Ferrari engines in modern Maserati cars, I'd call that a step in the right direction. All of the Italian cars, from Ferrari to Fiat, are intermingled in ownership now anyway. I will agree that the Biturbo and the TC share the center tail light though. I paid under $20K for mine, and even with huge discounts, the Maserati was many thousands more for very little difference. I actually preferred the dashboard and the concealed headlights on the Chrysler; when they later refreshed the LeBaron, it got headlights more like these. \r\nThe 3.0 Mitsubishi six cylinder engine was very good; it definitely punched above its 141hp at all speeds, quick both from a stoplight and in passing at speed for its time. I had mine for 11 years and close to 100K and sold it to a work colleague who had it for years after that. \r\nThere were only two weaknesses that I recall. The transmission was a new, electronically controlled four speed for 1990 and while an excellent performer, mine needed a rebuild at 59K. Fortunately, Chrysler offered a standard six-year 60K warranty and they paid to rebuild it. I didn\u2019t even realize I had a problem with it when I brought the car in for an oil change and mentioned, almost in passing, that when I started the car that morning in zero degrees F, it took a few seconds to get into gear. A small town dealer that didn\u2019t sell me the car was the best I\u2019ve ever encountered. \r\nThe only other issue, and it may not have developed in the Maserati version, was a proclivity to burn out the window motors, but only in the rear windows. \r\nMy guess is that this will make a fine weekend cruiser for not much coin. The nice thing about the 3L V6 powertrain is that it's relatively cheap to maintain (Chrysler put that engine in like 10 bajillion of their cars across their product lineup), and they are so insanely comfortable to drive (if you've never driven one...you need to, they are SO incredibly smooth!). When you take the top off, it's just gorgeous! Two tops...a removable hard top, and a beautiful soft top! These cars were a bit under rated and it sickens me when I have read disparaging reviews in car books over the years from so called car guys who have never sat in one, let alone driven or owned a TC. AS stated, the Chrysler v6 was super reliable and easy to repair. In contrast to the domestic Lebarron, the sheet metal seemed thicker and the weight of the hood is shockingly heavy. Also the quality of the paint and finish was superior. I felt this was a nice driving car but not quite a sports car or GT. The v6 turbo which mine lacked was a better option for fun driving. My criticisms were this car could have benefited from an independent rear end and bigger brake rotors and calipers which are tiny. The interior which was filled with cheezy Chrysler fake wood which I covered with leather and fragile thin leather throughout which is not forgiving if not properly maintained from new. I installed Audi TT seats in mine, again personal preference. If only Chrysler eliminated the stupid smashed in rocker panel area the TC would have eliminated all comparisons to the half the money Lebarron's.
