Norton changed to left side shift in 1975 and this bike has a1971 transmission on the right which is 1 up and 2,3,4 down. The frame and transmission is 1971 and the engine is 1974. I had 3 issues with the bike. The first was the suspension because the bike was lowered for the original owner 1 inch which it would bottom out going up my driveway or hitting bumps in the street so I had the bike raised back to the original height. I then installed a Lansdowne suspension just for improvement based on recommendation from other Norton enthusiast. The second issue was an oil leak due to the dipstick did not have a fill mark scribed on the oil dip stick and I was accidentally over filling it causing a drip. New York City Norton which is close to me reviewed this and then put a mark on the dipstick at the proper level so I didn\u2019t put too much oil in it. The third Issue was that there was a small leak from a transmission crack that resulted in a drip. Again I had New York City Norton look at this and was told the Norton transmissions were subject to cracking because of the close spacing of the shafts in the transmission causing a bearing to move too much. I then had CNW replace the transmission with a new Andover Norton transmission to stop the leak which is a modern thicker and avoids cracking. This would include the engine cradle / swing arm assembly. It would not be as involved as building a complete machine since sub assemblies would already be done but definitely a big job.\nThe idea behind the #122 build was to have the frame stand out from the other body panels in order to show it off. The Commando frame is truly beautiful and stream lined in its simplicity. When you look at the bike from most any angle you can see the frame and how everything is attached to it. I have built a lot of bikes with silver frames and it somewhat does the same thing but not as aggressively as this bright red one. Its a different approach than what you see on most Commandos out there. \nIf it was a black frame, it would just blend in and one of the unique features, and what makes this bike pop, would just go away. Sure, it would still be a nice bike but not the same visually.\nIf you end up being the next caretaker of this machine and are really wanting a frame color change, I would be happy to talk to you about it in more detail.
