I met some of few who remain alive at Carlisle this past July. \n\nThen President Lynn Townsend was continually berated by his teenage sons that his company was building frumpy unexciting cars and that Pontiac, Ford & Chevrolet were much cooler.\n\nTownsend reassigned Hoover to a new position with the task to make Dodge & Plymouth competitive and a popular subject in high school student parking lots. \n\nHoover was given wide authority to issue change orders (he bragged he had his own pad of them pre-signed by Townsend) in the engineering and manufacturing areas. This allowed Hoover to side step the usual bureaucratic morass that stifles innovation and in this case would delay much needed speed parts. \n\nThe result is the induction system seen on this car called \"Max Wedge\" introduced for 1962 and then the 1964 426 Hemi, which was the existing RB block with new hemispherical combustion chambered cylinder heads. \n\nThe 62 B body which includes this Sport Fury is smaller and lighter than its Ford & GM peers. My personal favorite of the first gen B-body right here, the 1963 Plymouth. It still has the pointy windshield and curved dash of the 1962 but the sheetmetal is smoothed out and proportioned. I especially admire the front fenders for the wheel opening shape, the forward angle of the leading edge and then the simple clean grill between the integrated turn signal/parking lights. The drivetrain is optimal and in the character of the Max Wedge years. I personally am not a fan of pistol grip shifters, I like my shifting hand palm down but I get it as that grip is iconic to Mopar. I get really excited when I see the big disk brakes, the reinforced control arms and hallelujah a big anti-roll bar. This will go around corners like no real Max Wedge ever. The stiff rear leaves with Cal-Trac are exactly right, no bogus coil over surgery. Interesting to see the drag style slider rear spring mounts. Very good for lateral control but unusual on the street. It puts the rear spring eye nice and close to the frame rail as it's under rather than beside for the mini-tub clearancing. I might consider hitting it occasionally with some waterproof grease. And finally, great wheel choice in appropriate 15\" diameter with some serious sidewall. A really awesome upgraded machine that doesn't corrupt anything but improves it everywhere.
