The speedometer is off as original gears were 4:88. I have part number for the correct speedo driven gear needed but have yet to find one. I have only driven the truck about 200 miles since I got it on the road, but I did take it out on the interstate and with a GPS checked the speed. \r\n\r\nI do not know about the gas mileage. My original intention when I started this restoration/built about 19 years ago was to extend my use of the truck for another 20 years beyond the 18 years of good service it had already given me. It has rescued many vehicles including righting a rolled over JD 350 Crawler-Loader. While it could pull about anything, by winch or hitch, it did lack in loaded trailer towing ability and was very busy keeping up with traffic even unloaded. The very important front brakes were marginal. The objectives of my modifications were to help with those deficiencies. I also wanted the maximum traction in any situation. \r\n\r\nI started doing all the work myself, but the body work was going slow so I turned it over to a professional. When it returned from the body shop, it was so nice I had second thoughts about my plan to press it back into use. Additionally, while the truck has seen inverse aging in the last 19 years; I have not. There have been many changes that have caused me to think this truck is way more than I\u2019ll ever be able to use appropriately again. \r\n\r\nBack on topic, I felt leaving the interior more or less as is with its signs of prior serious use was fitting. The Elgin camshaft is a grind for low RPM torque; the specifications are shown in one of the photos. I was hoping that the driving videos would capture the amount of torque the truck has, but they did not. While I\u2019ve not pulled any loads, or for that matter even given it full throttle, I can tell from the way it accelerates and climbs hills that it has much more torque to the road than with the 318 V8 had, even given the higher gearing. While the 440 engine installed is a \u201cHigh Performance\u201d version, by the year of its manufacture in 1974 that did not mean high compression. With the installed cam it seems to run fine on regular gas. I expect it could be tuned for higher output with additional ignition timing advance and use of premium fuel. \n\nThe five speed transmission also helps with heavy loads/towing as it puts the gear ratios closer together. There is a table in one of the photos that shows the overall gear ratios for the original NP435 transmission with 4:88 differentials and the NP540D transmission with the 4:10 differentials, among some other options I considered. \n\nAnother demonstration that I intended to be captured by the videos, but was not, is how quiet the winch is when engaged and how it can be used in all five gears for retrieve and reverse for controlled pay out. The truck has a hand throttle so that the idle could be put on high while the winch was in use, or for other purposes. I did not reconnect that as I really feel the winch should only be used with an operator in the driver\u2019s seat controlling the throttle and clutch engagement. While I never had a close call with winch entanglement, it is not something to be taken lightly.
