I have a '67 GT 390 4 speed cougar in Caspian blue so I am a big fan. \r\n\r\nInteresting data to add, in 1967, Mercury produced 116,289 std hardtops (65A), 27,209 XR-7 hardtops (65B), and 7,395 bench seat hardtops (65C), totaling 150,893 Cougars. I don't have the numbers for Caspian Blue bench seat cars (very low) but out of 143,498 Cougars, only 4,222 were painted Caspian Blue - 2.9% of production. How many of those were XR-7 S code's? The tachometer just had warning lights to replace the missing instruments in its lower section. (That's why Shelby added oil and amp gauges below the center of the dash in the '67 and '68 GT350/500.)\r\n\r\nSo with the clock in the center console on the XR-7, that freed up one nacelle in the top-center, where the Mustang either had an optional clock or a blank. But that still left the Mercury one spot short, so I guess they had no other choice but to put the oil pressure gauge over to the right. \r\n\r\nMy grandmother had a '68 XR-7, and as a child riding in the front passenger seat, I used to love to watch the gauge needle climb when she'd first start the car up. Hertz regional executives got \"demo\" cars as a job perk. \r\n\r\nSo I really doubt this one was ever destined to be a rental, but instead used by a V.P., general manager, or someone like that. Even though you may have been able to rent a Cougar, it would have probably been one with a base 289, air conditioning, and a few other things.
