For cars of this and similar age, they offer a replacement insurance that is more like life insurance for a car, more than the typical collision damage insurance. You (the owner) substantiate a fair value based on recent sales, and you buy an amount of insurance up to that amount. If the car is damaged for less, it gets fixed. If it is damaged more, you get the full insured value (Hagerty appraised this car for replacement cost of $16,000). You might think that's high, but that was what we negotiated in 2020 when I put the car on the road. For information on the pros and cons of buying/owning/insuring/and registering a car with a rebuilt salvage title, I found this website by the nonprofit \"Upsolve\" to be authoritative, and very helpful: https://upsolve.org/learn/salvage-title-cars/. Check your state to learn about the process before you bid, but it really isn't a big deal in NY, and we're about as heavily regulated as you can get. It took me a day at the DMV garage in Rochester NY for the inspector to find.... nothing, just as had been found by the DMV inspection in CA when the rear hatch was replaced (the event that \"totaled\" the car). In the case of this car, the nature of the damage is well documented, minor, and has been completely repaired and certified in the two fussiest states in the US. Still, it has the \"brand\". Just check your state regulations to see what's what. Due diligence is not that difficult. It's all online. I'm very happy that I didn't pass on this car back in 2019. The standard M-camshaft idled as smooth as silk, and was great around town, but the engine only generated 114 hp, and the M-cam was stuffed above 3900 RPM, where the M-cam hangs and crawls towards 4000 RPM, and finally the transmission will shift to 3rd and that's around 50 mph. So, not great for passing, nor for steep hills. The mods under the NA thread are all mild, but their collective effect on the character renders a completely different engine with a 15-20% boost in HP, no loss in driveability, longevity, or gas mileage, and it will still run fine on 87 octane. Machining 0.04\" off the new cylinder head raised compression from just under 10:1 to about 10.2:1. Adding the IPD turbo cam and adjustable timing gear and the larger cat convertor and exhaust, as well as the improved ECU and fueling chips allowed the engine to breath better and continue to climb all the way to 6000 RPM. My experience in getting over the Berkshires and around NHs White Mtns (we have a camp in Franconia), mirrored your experiences on hills. Now? The car climbs hills with ease. It will stay in 2nd gear past 70 if you mat the pedal, and will pull as strongly as 140 HP can in this car. So, there is 30% of the original tread gone, but that's 50% of the real life of the tires unless you want to drive them until they are slicks with zero tread depth.
