The low end torque of the 440 gives it the jump and then the Hemi reels it in for the pass. As a top end revver the Hemi likes a digger gear and the capacity of the ports is why so many got blown up. They would rev past the factory bottom end. Racers knew to put lots of careful attention into the oiling system and bearings. I'm in the camp who consider the 440 the better all around street engine. Racers of course will prefer what was intentionally a race engine.\n\nI was born in Foxborough and had lots of cousins in Norwood. It's fun for me to picture this GTX around town. I notice the front anti-roll bar is removed and I don't see mounting tabs on the lower control arms. Drag racers would remove the weight and resistance that slows front end lift but I'd sure want it on the street. When I lived on Cape Cod there was a service station owner whose driving talent put him in demand as a hired gun. He'd drive anything but for his own rides preferred Chevies. Most impressive was his tuning. His cars were always the fastest in town and he would help others for a fee (but still beat them). His cars would look nearly stock under the hood. I remember he had a distributor bench tester and told me once how important mechanical and vacuum advance curves and limits are. BTW he always ran with distributor vacuum connected which was not the thing at the time. He also had the most extensive collection of carb tuning jets and components I've ever seen. And he was the first to show me a little bit about reading spark plugs. Engines of the time were deceptively simple and the folks who studied and worked at tuning were like magicians to me. Of course that talent would be especially concentrated at the drag strip. The figures below are from official Chrysler literature, for the 1971 model year, which I have in my collection. \r\n\r\n(As an aside, because of ever-more-stringent emissions standards (as well as pressure from the insurance companies), the 1971 model year marked the beginning of a notable trend to reduce horsepower; some of the reduction a conscious decision by the manufacturers; some a byproduct of steps which needed to be taken to meet the new EPA standards. Of the \u201cBig 3,\u201d Chrysler was the least affected, and, in ways, although the \u201971 model year was nearly the proverbial \u201clast hurrah,\u201d in other ways, with the introduction of the new-for-\u201971 fuselage\u2708\ufe0fstyling of the \u201971 B-Bodies, 1971 was, option-wise, a truly remarkable year! \r\n\r\nAlthough there would be a horsepower reduction in some Mopar mills (perhaps, most notably, the B-Engine Series 383 HP, which was down by 35 Gross Horsepower (with a rating of 335 Gross Horsepower for the \u201968-\u201970 model years, as installed in the Road Runner -&- Super\ud83d\udc1dBee, and, 300 Gross Horsepower for the \u201971 model year)), the RB 440-cube engines went largely unscathed, down by a mere 5 Gross Horsepower, while the 426Hemi, in what would be it\u2019s final year of new-car-production availability, had no reduction whatsoever in it\u2019s Gross Horsepower ratings, the emission standards achieved with the adaptation of a one-year-only manual choke.)\r\n\r\nThe figures themselves, for \u201971, showed 2 different sets of ratings. The first set consisted of Gross HP & Torque Ratings. These had been the \u201cindustry standard,\u201d especially during the \u201cHorsepower Wars,\u201d which reflected the engine on the dyno, usually without any power-robbing accessories (including essentials), such as the water pump (because cooling water was pumped in), fan (because a large cooling fan was used), alternator, & power steering pump, as well as being unencumbered by factory exhaust systems.\r\nThe second set consisted of SAE Net HP & Torque Ratings (as installed in the vehicle).\r\n\r\nHere are the figures, for comparison, from which you can draw your conclusions:\r\n\r\nHorsepower & Torque:\r\n440-4-barrel Super Commando (or, Magnum, or, TNT):\r\nGross Horsepower: 370 @ 4,600 RPM; Net Horsepower: 305 @ 4.600 RPM\r\nGross Torque: 480 Lbs./Ft. @ 3,200 RPM; Net Torque: 400 Lbs./Ft. @ 3,200 RPM\r\n\r\n440-6-barrel:\r\nGross Horsepower: 385 @ 4,700 RPM; Net Horsepower: 330 @ 4.700 RPM\r\nGross Torque: 490 Lbs./Ft. @ 3,200 RPM; Net Torque: 410 Lbs./Ft. @ 3,200 RPM\r\n\r\n426-8-barrel Hemi:\r\nGross Horsepower: 425 @ 5,000 RPM; Net Horsepower: 350 @ 5,000 RPM\r\nGross Torque: 490 Lbs./Ft. @ 4,000 RPM; Net Torque: 390 Lbs./Ft. @ 4,000 RPM\r\n\r\nApproximate Weights (less accessories):\r\n440 4-barrel, or 6-barrel: 670 lbs.\r\n426-8-barrel Hemi: 765 lbs.\r\n(Note: The above figures would be closer to 700, and, 800 lbs., respectively, when in \u201cfull dress.\u201d)\r\n\r\nI\u2019m adding a non-MoPar into the mix! The potential to discuss is how it had to be compromised with tuning for the market, like shallow caster so manual steering could be an option and camber settings biased to high mileage tire wear. I pointed it out earlier, but the full removal of the front anti-roll bar suggests some history that along with \"stock engine\" I think is not fully revealed. At least the removed bar is included but the control arm tabs need to be welded back on.
