They were designed and built to handle and stick to a track at speeds in excess of 170-200 MPH. That rear \"wing\" (really an airfoil as a wing causes lift and this was designed to push the car down) created in excess of 900 lbs of downforce at 190 MPH. So much so that on the test mule of the Daytona it was collapsing the top of the quarter panel and braces had to be added to the trunk floor. Both the Daytonas and Superbirds have them. Coefficient of drag on a Daytona was 0.29, the Superbird was IIRC 0.32 . The Daytona was about 1-1.5 MPH faster given equal HP. Richard Petty once said he hated these cars as they took away the advantage he felt he has as a great driver, he said it was impossible to spin them as that when they started to come around the uprights of the airfoils would straighten the car out. It will, however, be appealing & illuminating to all fans of MoPar cars of this era, because it extensively covers the entirety of assembly in \u201cyou-are-there\u201d detail! As I mentioned in my initial comment for this auction, I was a member of every national Chrysler Corp. supercar-oriented club, when the clubs had there heyday, back in the 70s & 80s (and, into the early 90s). It was a time of wonderful camaraderie, as well as a time of sharing, and, discovery, in what would become a growing MoPar hobby/movement. Attending National Meets every year, sharing information & \u201cfinds\u201d among many friends (including, as an example I well remember, the late Ron Adair bringing to the \u201985 MoPar Nats @ Chrysler\u2019s Chelsea Proving Grounds a resurrected loaded \u201971 Butterscotch hemi Challenger pilot car which he discovered being used as a chicken\ud83d\udc13coop in rural Michigan)! The reason I mention a bit o\u2019 back history, re: the link to this article, is that the late Dave Patik was a very important member of our Winged Warriors/National B-Body Owners Association, and, he made many contributions to the club. It was Bright Green with a white wing. It was a 440 car with a sticker price of a few hundred over $4,000, from what I remember.\r\n\r\nI saw it sitting on the lot every time I went to pick him up and then to take him back to get his car. They would lower the price about every time I went there, which may have only been 4 or 5 times total. The last time that I saw it, they had a price painted on the window of $2,995, and they had painted bright red/orange flames on the front fenders, befitting a 51 Mercury. On the next trip, it had disappeared. I didn't ask what happened to it. Anyways we went to a Dodge dealership to look at Challengers. I wandered off and spotted these 2 or 3 cars way in the back of the dealership lot. They were next to an orchard and covered in dirt from the orchard. One of them even had a flat tire. They were Charger Daytonas. I tried to talk my future brother in law into buying one of them. But he had his heart set on a Challenger. He ended up buying a challenger R/T triple black with a pistol grip shifter and a 340 Magnum with a shaker.
