The fact that the car is fully analog and with out any of the silly lights and gadgetry makes it such a pleasure to drive. I have other cars that I take to work or to go shopping but the boxster is used exclusively when you want to go and enjoy a drive . It may be a gorgeous day and you want to find your favorite windy road or maybe you just want to listen to some pink floyd and de-stress for a while and shift some gears. Its a wonderful feeling being engaged with the car and working the controls . For me it just doesnt get any better. The boxster has got all of the essential-purist drivers essentials without any of the numbing or distracting driver aids. The manual 5 speed box, a firm brake pedal, the mid engine layout ( which really helps the car turn in) , perfectly weighted steering, non existent body roll or dive under braking. In my opinion the 986 is the best bang for your buck. I became a British sports car person back in the fifties when you could buy a used Jaguar XK120 for $750.00 and, back then, it was pretty damn fast. (Wanted a 300SL but lacked the funds) I have watched that old British sports car esthetic fade and the Porsche 356 evolve into one of the most revered and valuable marks. The 356 in the fifties, not so fast. The XK120 looked like a crouched animal, ready to attack. The 356, not so much. But, a 356 today can be very, very valuable and a Porsche person is likely to be, at least from what I have witnessed, a Porsche person to the bone. When the Boxter, a real Porsche, appeared in 1996 I thought, what a beautiful car. What a beautiful design. Beautiful or not, seems they failed to make the team. So back to my question? Why so affordable. Is it the \"chick car\" thing that has caused the Porsche mystic and associated values to not stick? I think I'm going to find one I can test drive. These cars were not beat on like Japanese or American sports cars - they were garaged and maintained for the most part. So there are plenty of good examples to be had. The poorly maintained and high mileage cars are dirt cheap. The other factor is that they are expensive to fix when things break. I spent $4k to have a camshaft actuator replaced and computer reflashed because one or the other was faulty. And that\u2019s not even maintenance. Other elephant in the room is the IMS bearing - not gonna even touch that here. Plenty of info online. This car has had a preventative replacement bearing even though 99 not so problematic. But it\u2019s been done along with other related work (which seems premature to me but hey it\u2019s done). This is the sweet spot for value for Boxsters IMO. Left the hardtop behind and when shipper arrived he balked because it wasn\u2019t palletized. So I picked it up on another trip I had to make in my truck delivering a trailer to LA. Driving these cars top down especially out west and in the heartland is the best part. It\u2019s something you will always remember and cherish. Just have it checked out post purchase before you hit the road. Mine got a 100% good to go from a local mechanic and the seller was gracious enough to take it in for me.
