The small, but practical size and very Italian-sounding horn, bring smiles to all, and good memories and stories from the Europeans I\u2019ve met at local car events. A five-seater with two ashtrays! \r\n\r\nBut, out of respect to my wife and my two car garage, I\u2019m limiting myself to one fun car, and have moved on to an \u201982 Spider 124. I know what you\u2019re thinking, but I\u2019ve never owned a convertible and found one unexpectedly at the end of the summer that I couldn\u2019t pass on, and I love new experiences. \r\n\r\nTo give you some insight as to what my particular Panda is all about, here is a link to some videos from my mechanic. I didn\u2019t realize he made YouTube videos at the time I started going to him, but after getting to know him in person and from his channel, I\u2019ve found that he\u2019s worked on just about anything and everything, and leans toward the unusual and obscure. A dying breed, I\u2019d say. Several people around Portland and a couple Fiat guys at car events in particular, recommend him. My standing mandate to him has been to please make me aware of any issues he sees, whether or not I've brought them to his attention. We haven\u2019t discussed the oil beyond his recommendation of frequent oil changes and checking the level regularly. I knew this, but time got away from me, and perhaps driving an EV the past five years put me to sleep a bit. He\u2019s worked on it and driven it a few times since then and hasn\u2019t been concerned. That said, the car runs very strong, so I\u2019m not sure there is an issue. When the low oil was discovered, it was after ski season, and the car had made many 150 mile round trips on 65mph freeways to the mountain. That might just be how it is with a small car like this that was built 28 years ago for smaller, slower roads. I\u2019d wanted to own and experience one firsthand since I spent the summer of my junior year in college working in Italy in 1991. The time was finally right a couple years ago and I started looking. This process was all new to me, I\u2019d never imported a car before. I was moving slowly and cautiously with my due diligence: communicating across time zones with the exporter/importer/shipper/EU trucking company, learning how to legally release the car from \u201cItalian DMV\u201d and learning how to legally register the car with Oregon DMV. The seller in Rimini was the owner of a modern used car dealership, who would occasionally buy older gems like this if they were in really good condition and sell them personally after fixing them up a bit (see BaT description for the work he did). Really nice guy who knew exactly what needed to be done and was a huge help in getting the car \u201cde-registered\u201d in Italy and on the truck to the port in Germany. I\u2019ve attached a photo of the Carta di Circolazione from Italy. \r\n\r\nThe car made it to the port of Tacoma and I burst out laughing the first time I saw it driving toward me. It was a 90 degree summer day and the Panda did great at 65 - 70 freeway speeds on the 150 mile drive to Portland. Temperature gauge constantly in the middle. Just before closing, I stopped by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, to see if it would pass emissions testing. It failed, but not by much. I had a new catalytic converter installed a few days later and passed DEQ with flying colors. I\u2019m happy to share my test results if anyone is interested. \r\n\r\nShortly after that, I went to DMV for VIN inspection and to make application for registration and title, and was in and out in less than thirty minutes. In Italy, the Panda is known as Pandino, but because Oregon plates are limited to six characters, I had to go with PANDNO (pan-d-no). And, I couldn\u2019t resist going with the obvious and appropriate wine country plates. \r\n\r\nThe entire process was a long, interesting, educational, expensive, nerve-racking, leap of faith experience. But, very fun and rewarding to have this car here DIY-style. As a result, the normal spare tire (145/80R-13) would not fit under the hood. I decided to try a 135/80R-13 which was not available in the USA. I ordered one from England, and it arrived by air! All they have to do is put a label on it, no box needed. Shipping was about the same price as the tire, and since the tires are so cheap and small, it really isn't a problem.
