I worked summers sweeping floors, taking out the trash, stocking shelves, dusting off the new bikes, thinking about bikes, talking about bikes........wishing I had many of the bikes in the shop. \r\n\r\nThe shop mechanic and his brother purchased YZ 490s in 1983. I was 9 yrs old and they were in their mid 20s. The had been racing locally. I loved seeing the 490s and hearing them start up. Watching Broc Glover win the 1983 500cc championship made me love these bikes even more. I eventually owned a 1983 YZ 60. A few years later I owned a 1983 YZ 100. I kept in touch with the two brothers, as they were family friends. The shop mechanic rode his 490 for a few years, the brother didn't have time to ride. I would see this bike sitting in a garage in Millsboro, PA and comment how it still looked new and was just a bigger version of my 60 or 100. (all air cooled YZs from 1983).\r\n\r\nWhen I graduated college, I had the opportunity to purchase the mechanic's 490. I was in great shape. I rode it for a few years and occasionally entered some vintage raced in Western New York. Eventually, I had the opportunity to purchase this 490. I couldn't say yes fast enough. Sadly, the original owner passed away around the time I purchased the motorcycle. I have since moved from PA, to TX, to MI and back to TX. I cared for the bike the best that I could. I only rode it in a field or in the alley or in the back yard. I ended up breaking my ankle back in 2008, that ended my ability to ride motocross. I kept the bike the way it was, to respect to the original owner......and because that is how I remember seeing the bike sitting in the original owners' garage long ago.\r\n\r\nThe bodywork plastic is all original, the chain and sprockets are original. I believe the Bridgestone tires are original. They need replaced, but I didn't plan on riding, so I left them alone. The foam that is attached to the frame, under the tank is original. Thank you to the seller.\r\n\r\nBeen wondering if I should share my '83 YZ 490 story. I'm this far, might as well. :)\r\n\r\nI bought a well used '81 YZ 465 from a local racer in '82. By late '83 I was shopping again, and bought a new left over '83 YZ 490, as the '84s were also on the floor by then.\r\n\r\nAt that time, I was buying or subscribing to at least three mags a month. Dirt Bike, Dirt Rider, Motocross Magazine, and usually Cycle World. The '82 YZ 490 had new suspension from the first gen Monocross rear of the '81 I had, but it had a linkage no one seemed to like. The '83 did away with the linkage, and the suspension reviewed well, but too soft for hard motocross. Since I was riding mostly hare scrambles and single track woods, I figured it would be perfect. For me at least, it was.\r\n\r\nThe magazines also reviewed the engine as being rich in the bottom and mid range, but that it rev'ed well and had monster power on top. That too was accurate. Having seen the videos of this bike, I wonder if it still has the stock #45 pilot jet. The first thing I did was change it for a #35, and it made a big difference. As an aside, a friend of mine bought a new '83 IT 490 about the same time. It also had that big #45 pilot, and swapping to a #35 had the same results.\r\n\r\nStable at speed? Yup, very. I went up a tooth on the countershaft and down two teeth on the rear sprocket, and ran the Desert 100 in eastern Washington once. We didn't have GPS then, of course, but knowing that stock gearing gave something in the low 90s mph, I'm sure I'm not exaggerating that it was a 100+ mph bike with the change. That bike ran high speeds, near piss tight several times that race, so you can guess the speed, incredibly well.\r\n\r\nOne more note, this about the 4 speed transmission. First through fourth gear on this bike is identical to second through fifth on the YZ 465. In other words, on the 465 you have a first gear that is simply an extra gear the 490 doesn't have, or need. I later had an '89 YZ 490, which did have a 5 speed, but that low first gear really wasn't needed, even in the woods.
