Not many heat cycles with 20k miles so those are soft and pliable. \n\nNo need for timing chains at this mileage. More specifically, GTI's with VR powerplants. My first car was a Reflex Silver 03' 24v. After that, a Tropic Orange 99.5' 12v. After that, a BMP 04' R32. Little did my friends and I know that the 4th Generation Golf/Jetta lineup would forever be the peak of VW engineering, pairing driver ergonomics with reliable and sporty powertrains that, minus their biased FWD transmissions, connected to the road much better than they should have.\r\n\r\nThe sound of the 24v was just short of the 3.2 R32 engine, but I can think of few V6 engines that produce the sound that this motor does. The car has a few weak points, all easily addressable. Cheap OE MAF sensors that fail. Weak OE axles that dealt with any change in ride height or power increase poorly (CV joints). Plastic water pump impellers and adjacent pipes that should be upgraded. Plastic timing chain tensoners that should be addressed when due service requires a removal of the housing. \r\n\r\nI say all that, but these cars are dead reliable and stupid fun. VW hasn't made a hot hatch as capable, dependable, and affordable since. \r\n\r\nThere aren't many left in this condition.
