On my 98, I simply unscrewed the inside glove box lining, removed the 5 lb piece of useless metal they put in to pass some safety crash test from the 1990s, and then put the lining back on. The rear window surround is known to be a weak point in the otherwise excellent convertible tops on Z3s. The protrusion of a small amount of the wire reinforcement is a very small issue. And the clarity of the plastic is rather good for a 26 year old plastic window. The rear window can be easily replaced since the window is attached with a zipper all around and replacement windows are readily available and will zip in with some care.
