The seat and floor pans were repaired as well as the rocker panels, all of which had some rust damage which was removed. The engine has never been rebuilt. If that is shown somewhere I will delete that incorrect statement. While the engine was out, my documents show that the oil pump was replaced, gear box synchronizers replaced, and carb dampers adjusted or replaced. The interior was redone with a new kit, and I specifically requested that the stock seat belts be replaced with the current racing harness type design. In my opinion, the stock belts were not adequate. In addition to daytime missions mentioned before, my A-1 Skyraider squadron flew night missions along the Ho Chi Minh trail, working with Forward Air Controllers in an attempt to interdict Viet Cong trucks moving troops and supplies to the south. At least at night we could see the 37 mm tracers and most of the time, avoid being hit. We lost some pilots, in all different kinds of missions, including one A-1 pilot hero who was shot down during the successful search and rescue (SAR) pickup of the F-4 back seater, whose call sign was Boxer 22 Bravo. That SAR was the largest effort in the war and was made into a movie titled Bat 21. I flew 4 missions in that SAR, but I was not on scene for the pickup of Boxer 22B. The F-4 front seater, Boxer 22 Alpha, was found on the ground by the VC and killed. I flew the T-37 and T-38 in pilot training at Laughlin AFB, Texas. Following my 1969-1970 year in Thailand and TDY to Danang AFB, I was stationed at Keesler AFB, MS. Our mission there was as primary flight instructors to Vietnamese students, as part of the Vietnamization effort, as the US was ending our efforts in the war. I resigned my commission in 1973 and moved to Atlanta, where I had a successful career in utility planning and project management. I had an interview with Delta Airlines, but that was the start of the first fuel embargo, and they were not hiring new pilots.
