In 2002 it was evident that the Plus 8 Morgan was near the end of the model run due to the increasing worldwide emission standards that the classic Rover V8 could not meet. I had owned four Plus4 1960s Morgans previously. My first was a 1963 Plus 4 we restored to the point that it felt uncomfortable driving, as can be attested by winning the Best of Show twice at the National Morgan Meet. That was followed by two genuine Super Sport Plus 4s and a Plus 4 vintage race car prepped to SS specs that I raced for twenty years, along with a 1956 Lotus Eleven Lemans.\r\nAs the years passed, I wanted a more comfortable Morgan with more performance and durability. I wanted the new car to look similar to an early Plus 8 since the Plus 8 model had grown dimensionally over the years. I tailored my order to the factory to reflect this vision. The order included the standard alloy wheels, much like the early Plus 8\u2019s. I think they are so classic to the Plus 8\u2019s, and I had dealt with the maintenance on so many wire-wheeled cars, including two race cars, that it was an obvious choice. Another advantage of alloy wheels is that alloy wheeled cars are slightly narrower because the offset of the factory wire wheeled cars requires slightly wider fenders. The clean look of the car was enhanced by deleting the outside door handles, which I feel is superfluous in a Morgan. I ordered the car with a continental height windscreen, about an inch shorter than the U.S. spec Morgan Plus 8 in the 2000\u2019s. The standard windscreen gives the car a lower, more classic look and looks exceptionally great with the top up as the pictures illustrate. I have no problems with the headroom, and my 6\u20193\u201d son fits comfortably with the top-up. Another delete was having the factory mount the outside mirrors. I wanted to experience driving the car first to see if we could fabricate something more classic. The car was California-compliant when I bought it, but it is not now. It can be easy to make a complaint again. After the car went through a break-in miles, I felt a lack of throttle response in the mid-rpm range. I had driven an older Plus 8\u2019s with much better revability. In 2003, I found the GoMoG website, which has become my workshop bible for the care and feeding of the Plus 8. If the moderator does not have an answer to a particular question, he can direct you to who does. It is an unbelievable site. Through Go MoG, I found another 2008 Plus 8 owner, David Poole. David is from England and was an engineer and test pilot. David had the same experience that the 2002 Plus 8 should perform better. On one of David\u2019s trips to England, he met with Mark Adams, an engine management specialist and founder of Tornado Systems Limited. Mark was developing a two-chip system to cure the drivability problems of the GEMS Plus 8. Mark found that the 2002 GEMS Morgan did not have knock sensors installed in the block, even though the plugs for the sensors were present. The car was transformed by adding the Tornado chips and placing the knock sensors. For a complete explanation, go to the Tornado Systems Limited website and search Products>RoverV8>Chips>GEMS>Land Rover V8 GEMS 8 Unlocked and Read More.\r\n I sent my ECU to England and had the two chips put in and the originals taken out and returned to me with the ECU. I also purchased knock sensors. Taking out the ECU in the Morgan is about a twenty-minute job. Knock sensors are placed into the block and torqued to spec, and plugged into the plugs that are already present. If you want to return to the original, finding a computer repair person to switch back the original chips and unplug the knock sensors should be easy. It is easy, and you are back to a compliant California engine. If you wanted to try both, you could also purchase an unlocked Gems ECU from Tornado Systems and have them install the Tornado Chips that you sent back to them. All you would have to do is change the ECU\u2019s and plug in the knock sensors. It\u2019s much easier and more foolproof. All you would have to do is change the ECU\u2019s instead of changing chips. The car has been rechipped for all states but California. To get it passed for California the old original chips would have to be put back in and the performance chips taken out. Any good person who deals with ECU\u2019s could due it. In fact knowledgeable home mechanic probably could as I have instructions on how to do it but I myself don\u2019t get involved with the working of computers. You then could send the performance chips back to Tornado in England and they could install them in an unlocked used ECU. You then have a performance ECU if you left California or\ud83d\ude1c. The performance chips now installed make a world of difference. The car has much better throttle response, revs higher, idles better and gives 10 to 15 horsepower more which in itself is not that important. The improvement in drivability is what is important to me. The 240lbs. is the question. It would probably be OK with that shoe size considering I have competition pedals that you can see in the interior photos. They give more space compared to the standard pedals which are big rubber things. The new pedals are smaller and adjustable both laterally and up and down. With the old pedals I actually kept a pair of driving shoes in the car to give me more space. The new pedals also let me have fun double clutching something I had to do with my Plus 4 racing Morgan on downshifts. It\u2019s an abbreviation for Generic Engine Management. It\u2019s a knockoff of a Bosch system and made in India. \r\nHaving worked with Bosch systems for decades, I\u2019m not impressed with the reliability and quality , but it\u2019s cheaper than Bosch. A quality adaptive system allows for variations in octane and quality and protects the engine from self destruction. It\u2019s hard for me to understand that Morgan would not utilize knock sensors since they are an important component in the system. Early on, the knock sensor would retard timing on all. cylinders and that caused a noticeable decrease in performance. As systems improved, the ability to modify only the \u201cnoisy one \u201c made their affect unnoticeable. By the time the driver is able to hear \u201cPing \u201c or knock, it\u2019s already possibly causing damage to the pistons. If.an engine is mapped or programmed for premium fuel and some knucklehead puts 87 in it, without that protection, I\u2019m sure you can understand what might happen. Slide 29 of my car illustrates the changes in the front bumper height and the turn signals. The bumper has been remounted to factory position with brackets sourced from a Morgan dealer. Clay Cook\u2019s restoration shop fabricated nacelles to mount on the front wings where they should be rather than hanging off of the bumper. In my opinion, they look better than the factory mounting. The headlights are a reproduction of the classic Lucas Tri Bars with halogen bulbs. You will also notice a square S.S. badge bar with no badges. For years, I had three of my favorite Morgan competition badges on the bar but eventually felt they cluttered up the front. This is only a personal preference. Photo 34 shows the wiper arms and blades. I switched them out for S.S. rather than the original black alloy. Photo 43 shows the rear of the car where the rear bumper has been lowered to factory spec utilizing polished S.S. brackets, and the fog lights have been moved from the bumpers to new units mounted on each side of the license plate where they should be located. Steering bearings have been added to reduce steering effort and custom made brake reaction rods placed to reinforce the upper crosshead arms under hard braking.The front discs are ventilated and crossdrilled and the rear brakes have Alfin dums which reduce unsprung weight and cool better. The rear suspension has been upgraded by adding an anti-tramp bar and a Panhard rod to stabilize the rear axle. I do believe the modifications to the front suspension was a genuine upgrade in ride,handling and longevity. The suspension change in the rear probably was not necessary since this is a road car and got carried away thinking I was racing again. I tried to special order white faced gauges but they could not accommodate the request. I then talked to Melvyn Rutter in England. Melvyn owns an outstanding Morgan sales, service, parts and restoration shop that I had felt with over the years. Melvyn obtained the gauges and sent them to CanTab Motors so the could be installed when the car arrived in Virginia. Melvyn also developed a kit to change the rocker switches to classic white toggle switches which we incorporated. The standard gauges and switches will be included in the spares. Although I don\u2019t know will anyone would want to retrofit them. Photo 67 shows bulb to adjust the pneumatic lumbar support that I had added a few years ago . It works well but unfortunately a combination of degenerative scoliosis, stenosis, and compression of L4 and L5 does not make sports car driving easy. I will mention the adjustable drilled alloy pedals, they are fantastic compared to the standard black rubber blocks that are standard. They can be adjusted to enable one to heal and toe if you want to have fun. Oh, the steering wheel is a Moto Lita 14\u201d that has been stained to match the dash along with a polished boss cover and horn push assembly. The original air bag and sty wheel will come with the car along with a special tool to arm and disarm the airbag when putting on or taking off the original wheel. Simple to do and instructions can be found on GoMoG. I replaced the battleship grey rocker covers with really nice RPI crome covers. Ignition wires were replaced by Magnacore high performance wires which are the best. The Land Rover V8 pushes out a lot of heat and most owners switch out the standard radiator for an aluminum one. I had a custom designed one fabricated by Ron Davis Racing. It is slightly longer and has a redesigned filler neck since the original had a short neck that was hard to get to. There are many little improvements I haven\u2019t mentioned but I would like to mention a few things that will come with the car. Photo # 161 shows some of the extras that come with the car. I will point out a few. There are four engraved axle caps out of S.S. After receiving them, I decided to use the caps that were standard since the black of the Morgan logo store out on a black car.You will see two headrests that came with the car. Little plugs on the seat backs can be taken out and the headrest can be slid in if you wanted. There are TWO seats of extra floor mats exactly like the factory with leather trim. The original headlights are also included. The original outside mirrors were never installed by the factory are included but truthfully if you want to install them there are much improved ones in the Morgan aftermarket that are S.S. And better shaped and constructed. You will see a long plastic wrapped tube that contains a extra hide of interior leather that I purchased just in case\u2026\u2026I don\u2019t know for what!
