Sat down with a cup of coffee checked out my morning BAT email, and lo and behold, my old car is listed! Yes, I'm the original owner who conceived of a mini that looked like the old 1970's SCCA GT5 cars, like the famous Fortec mini of the day. I spent decades finding all the parts, including an original set of Fortec fiberglass over flyscreen flares. Eventually, I had enough parts and cars to build two. One 1967 Cooper S that ended up restored to original condition, and this one that was originally to have a warmed over 1275 BMC A motor. But then I learned of MiniTec, which was just an hour away from my home, and saw a video of their AWD car. I went to see them and got to experience the FWD VTEC car (a scary torque steering monster) and the AWD version that was just as quick but handled so much better with 40% of the power on the front wheels. After a ride in the first MiniTec AWD car, my plans changed, and I decided to build this monster as a track/street car. I think I may still have a few build pix on my phone.\r\n\r\nI see a few changes on the car since I had it. Seats have been changed (I had a set of aluminum race seats permanently mounted to fit me, side mirrors have been added, upside down door cards installed, and the wiring harness has been mucked with. Everything was tidy and covered during my ownership.\r\n\r\nI'm 6'4\" with a 34 inch inseam, and fit in the car (with helmet) with the seats I had selected. I guess that depends on your tolerance for noise, vibration, squeaks, exhaust noise, no heat or A/C, etc. I built this car as a race car that could be run on the street, meaning it has lights. At it's heart, it's a track car. My longest continuous street drive was about 110 miles in February, and I thought it was tolerable. In some ways better than my '62 Lotus Super 7 with a Cosworth BDA engine. At least the Mini wasn't open air on a 38 degree day. I tried to avoid highways in this and the Lotus. Too many much bigger vehicles contending for space, oblivious of anything smaller than a Mack Truck. Same reason I stopped riding motorcycles.\r\n\r\nI drove the car to shows and to the track, generally 30 to 40 minute one way trips and never had second thoughts about it's street-ability. Another change I noted looking at the pictures, the ride height has been raised. I had it so low that it scraped over speed bumps and driveway entrances. I had to approach them at an angle in order not to scrape the exhaust. Again good for the track, not so good for the street, but it was a compromise I was willing to live with, but seems to have been changed to make it more street friendly by it's current owner.\r\n\r\nOne other note if you want to drive 400 miles: when the gas gauge says it's at half, fuel up. I got caught out one day when I ran out of gas and the gauge still said half full. Discovered that the fuel cell in the car has a foam insert that will not let the sensor go below the 50% measure point. Oops.
