After we watered up in FC, I had to use gloves on my hands to hold the steering wheel as we left, it was so bloody hot even with the top up! I could've gone faster, but the rock clatter off the floorpan at 60 was all we could take! 4WD is unnecessary when you've got a DS - with the driver-variable suspension clearance, I've shown up in all sorts of off-road places. \n\nOn one trip around 1968 in my '59 ID19, I drove from grad school in Chicago thru Denver, up Berthoud pass at 13,000 ft, on a one-lane dirt road the Rangers had warned me away from. Said I'd tear out my oilpan like a lot of others had done. I smiled, hiked the car up a notch, rode the middle ridge down a foot deep rutted mud road, up the mountainside with 180 deg. single lane switchbacks, and only worried about having to stop on the incline due to my pitiful 70 HP engine, fearing I'd never get moving even in 1st gear again. Couldn't feel any slop, so drove slowly out of town, and as I crossed a set of RR tracks at about 35 mph, the right front wheel left the car and went bounding into a schoolyard! I hardly felt a thing! Horrible scraping noise started immediately, but I had perfect control, made a normal straight stop. Fortunately no one was around to get hit by the wheel. The suspension arm, with its long travel, simply reached down and supported the car as tho this was just an anomaly to be tolerated. On examination, the very large balljoint retention nut on the forged steel arm had been ground down flush with the arm, along withe threaded shaft of the ball. Very fortunately, the kid who sold me the car had fudged the deal, jacking up the price on me when I arrived from Chicago, but it included a spare sedan! My then wife and I drove back to the barn, I swiped a good ball & nut from the extra car, returned and fixed the cabrio and this time I made damn sure the single bolt was tight! I'd had to partially reassemble the car to get it out of the barn, and evidently the kid had more than hastily put on that wheel. The rest of the trip was uneventful, with no damage to the car or wheel, just my nerves. I had one a few yrs back, a pure German version with the nice alloy wheels and Euro headlights. The shape is so smooth it still looks classy today and maybe forever vs the clones/clowns we see on the roads today. And the seats are wonderful - equal to the DS along with similar ergonomics/visibility and roomy interior. And to be able to open the hood and pluck the front inboard disc pads out without touching anything else was perfect accessibility. I seem to remember the power steering was an interesting design on the firewall also - certainly a different arrangement. And having had an earlier NSU 1200 with the floor mounted automatic stick shift (microswitch in knob actuation), vacuum-powered clutch & torque converter, I suspect the Ro would have been as much fun to drive, having the same system. \n\nAnd the Rover with its Knee-action front suspension is certainly unique (almost bought one unloved in a local garage in Ca.), but I suspected finding parts would be a problem, altho I loved some of its English attributes. \n\nSo here's a list of the DS innovations and I've probably missed a few:\n1. Hydropneumatic, automatic self-leveliing suspension independent at each end.\n2. Integral self-jacking by moving a lever, moving or motionless.\n3. Super long-travel suspension with extreme accuracy of wheel location due to tapered roller bearings on every suspension arm.\n4. Probably the only nearly perfect CRITICALLY DAMPED suspension - able to absorb nearly any roadshock in jounce and rebound vs any other car. Critical damping describes a spring/damper system in which there is virturally zero overshoot during rebound from a bump. The impulse is near totally absorbed.\n5. Integral shock absorbers which almost never wear out, and consist of only a flow port disc and several very thin circular steel flex discs and no seals as they're internal to the gas springs.\n6 Power rack & pinion steering which is hydraulically locked from the driver's side. Hitting a cinder block at 60 mph will not deflect the steering as the rack is locked by fluid on both sides and valved in/out only by the steering wheel.\n7. Centerpivot steering - each wheel pivots exactly thru its vertical centerline thru top & bottom tread patches. An impact on a front wheel cannot move the wheel right or left as there is no offset moment arm - all that happens is the suspension absorbs the impact and in worst case the lower forged steel boomerang-shaped suspension arm bends backwards and the wheel keeps rolling and the car tracks straight. The arm can be straightened by hand with a 10 ft pipe on it. I've done it myself with nothing but the pipe & my hands.\n8. Central engine-driven hydraulic system feeding power R&P steering, full power (no vacuum booster) front inboard disc brakes with full proportioning feedback and automatic load balancing front/rear, power semi-automatic 4 speed gearbox controlled with fingertip movement from steering wheel including automatic clutching, and of course the hydropneumatic suspension. This ought to be several separate features.\n9. Singlebolt wheels stronger than any splined wheel mounting system, and with integral captive fastener bolt.\n10. Single spoke \"safety\" steering wheel.\n11. Superb visibility from anywhere in the car. \n12. chair-high seats fantastically comfortable, and fully reclining. Can sleep 3.\n11. True mid-engine design with engine behind FWD transaxle for excellent balance and low polar moment of inertia meaning very rapid response to steering inputs.\n12. Spare tire behind front bumper for impact absorption in head-on collision, with mid-engine location providing 3 feet of collapse distance before the radiator is affected - that gives excellent impact energy dissipation.\n13. All body panels unstressed & can be unbolted yet the car is still drivable. This inspired the Fiero design, with its hang-on body panels.\n14. First integrated ventilation in ends of dashboard.\n15. Fiberglass or aluminum bolt-on roof for low CG.\n16. Fully closed underbody and even aerodynamically-shaped muffler to improve CD.\n17. Upswept trunk floor to use Coanda effect to suck rear end down to the road at speed. \n18. Spoiler integrated into rear roof edge where it drops a couple inches to recessed rear glass - creating a rolling vortex that pulls airfllow down to trundled to join with air exiting from under trunk floor. NOTE: wind tunnel study at Northwestern Unilv in '60s showed DS aero drag as less than a 911.\n19. One-layer tempered aircraft aluminum hood with hinges designed so the hood can be raised to vertical position and held there with simple U-shaped hook anyone can make up.\n20. Both hood & decklid when raised allow perfect front/rear visibility as they wrap around their glass. This is a nice safety feature when you wrap the hood over the roof at speed - I\"ve done it twice by forgetting to leave the fenders on or latch the hood! You can still see to drive safely! \n21. Doors which can be removed by loosening one hardened steel pivot bolt, then lifting door off top pivot. Rear door also requires removing cotter pin from hold-open link.\n22. All trim stainless or aluminum - no rot thru corrosion as with chromed steel trim/bumpers.\n23. Inboard full power disc brakes which could not be faded when R & T or C & D tried that with a DS around 1967 and compared the car to a Toronado.\n24. Braking safety improvement via brake \"pedal\" ( actually a champignon (mushroom) ) button on floor whose total travel from nothing to full lock of front discs is about 1/4 inch! The mushroom is mounted below the accel. pedal so one only has to pivot his/her foot to left and DOWN vs. lifting BACK UP and OVER with every other car. This saves precious fractions of a second and can make all the difference in a collision. And the driver gets very good feedback with little practice on the 1/4 inch travel brake. As mentioned before, the rear brakes take their pressure off the rear suspension gas springs, so they automatically compensate for any trunk load AND sliding of the rear wheels - it's almost anti-skid braking with no electronics. \n25. Anti-dive rear suspension: brake torque on rear wheels levers the long trailing arm DOWN on braking, dropping the rear so there is no nosedive on stopping. \n26. Safety rear end: The trunk design/structure is a very good energy absorber. It can collapse like a tin can about 2 feet before the rear window is contacted. And it works. I once drove home a DS I bought which had been flattened to the rear glass by a VW doing 40 mph into the stopped car at a light. The car was still drivable even with a slightly splayed out left rear wheel - the suspension worked fine. \n27. Frameless side glass - the panes ramp themselves tight to door gasket at top of travel. \nThe integral dash vents eliminate need for quarter windows.\n28. Side impact safety: The door bottoms overlap the chassis sills for 3 inches, and the sills are up to 7 inches wide. Very hard to punch a door over the sill. And foam-padded armrests protect one in side impact. I flew across the interior in one accident as I didn't have my belt on. Was unhurt except where my face took out passenger glass - \n29. Front wheel drive with inboard disc brakes - reduces unsprung weight to make suspension even more responsive. \n30. 6 inch diameter front wheel bearings which NEVER wear out. Sometimes they get noisy if seals let water in, but they never fail nor affect steering. They are the most massive wheel bearings you'll ever see, as the double-hooker Ujoint goes thru the CENTER of the bearing! The quality is astounding. \n31 First ever plastic (nylon) engine fan, perfectly designed turbine shape, lightest fan ever made, held on by first self-threading bolts designed for plastic, without need for metal thread inserts. I got them in the Plastics Hall of Fame & nobody could challenge them. \n32. Grill-less front end, bottom breather for cooling air. Aerodynamically cutting edge. \n33. Tierod balljoints which almost never wear out as the center-pivot wheel bearing balljoints put near zero side load on them during straight ahead driving. \n34. Adjustable steering tierod relay arms, mounted in ball bearings with screw-adjustable races. No cheap bushings! They last the life of the car. \n35. Timeless design for 20 yrs - all body panels from a '55 can be swapped onto a '75, including all glass & seats, much of dash, and whole powertrain from a 3 main bearing engine to the later 5 main engine. Two different muffler designs in 20 yrs. A really good design doesn't need to be changed every other year. Plus, you learn one car, you know nearly everything about them all, including much of the SM. \n36. Gas tank mounted inside closed structural box under rear seat. Fuel level sensor accessible from top on removal of rear seat and box lid. Nylon pickup tube which never corrodes, all the way to the fuel pump. \n37. Aluminum hemi-head with crossflow breathing thru Solex or Weber.\n38. Wet sleeve engine with iron liners which never seem to wear out, and are replaceable from the top. \n39. Which is why I dragged a 5 spd back from the UK once in my checked baggage for my cabrio. In the seller's garage in London, I split the box into diff half & gear half - each weighing 70 lbs to allow me to package them and get them into Heathrow on a rickety folding luggage cart without bodily injury & within the wt limit per item. The 5 main engines are short stroke compared to the early series engines ('55-'65), hence have to spin faster and soundproofing was never well done in the cars. One of the early wear issues with the 5 mains was rocker arm bushing wear from all the thrashing. If for some reason the oil feed to the rockers was compromised or not changed often enough, the steel rocker shafts would wear on their bottoms and the rockers and rods would rattle badly. Back when parts were hard to find, I would lathe cut new bronze bushes, flip the shafts bottom to top, build up the bottom area with mig, weld the oil hole shut, drill a new oiling hole, and turn down the weld to clean up the shafts. That worked pretty well as the topside sees no load & the tighter fit of shaft to bush upped the oil pressure to all the arms. On one return trip, he was cruising along a narrow two lane country road at 65, came to the crest of a hill to find two cars side by side facing him - one passing the other at 60+. He instantly whipped the wheel right, shot off onto the shoulder at 60, floated along in perfect control until he realized he was safe - turned back onto the road & never slowed down - there was no time to brake! If you think this is crazy, it's not. Now that we have very cheap yet good mig welders, the cars can be repaired easier and better than new by most decent repair shops with thinking employees. John took a junkyard, $125 car which we drove to his home around 1968 in Winnetka Ill., while watching the dash twist in front of us due to sill and floorpan rust. Over an awful Chicago winter, he handmade repair panels, riveted them together with roofing tar between the pieces and original chassis, and drew diagrams for the book, while I helped with replacing the hydraulic lines. Several yrs later he took the car back to France. During a visit there, I rode in that car with his family on the Boulevard Peripherique at 100 mph when the right rear tire blew. We heard a horrible clatter as the hubcap came off, rattled around under the fender, then shot past us on the road! There was no loss of control, the car was perfectly stable. Made a normal stop, changed the single bolt wheel in 10 mins & finished the trip. The car was back to full strength. I've done many similar repairs with mig, even putting a portable 110V one in my trunk to repair my father's '67 DS21 in his garage in rural Wisconsin. Local sheetmetal shop sheared out pieces from flat sheet & I did the rest in the garage. Remember, most all curved sections are in the hang-on body panels, easily removed and repaired separately if necessary. All one needs is a heating/ventilating shop nearby for replacement parts! The car is structurally sound as is now. But, as mentioned and to be clear, the repairs are not restoration quality, they were made for functionality and are body shop quality. This is very common on many D models restored in the past. Driver's wanted to keep their cars on the road and were not concerned with the collector aspect and resale value the car to do a proper concours level chassis repair.\n\nThe front jacking posts were not reinstalled when that repair was made. This does not detract from the strength of the repair.\n\nThat said, there are some small rust areas which could do with some attention,. They are pictured in the chassis shots.\n\nHowever, this is a fine driver's quality car optioned as the \"ideal\" and most desirable DS. I took it up to Lake Arrowhead once, and it did wonderfully on the twisty mountain roads. If I'd had more room in my garage, I'd have kept it, but it would not now be in nearly as nice a shape as Jay has been able to make it.
