They also get like 40mpg. They came at a transitional time for Nash/Hudson/AMC and survived 3 companies. They came out of many consumer studies by Nash Kalvenator and changed from the original NXI (Nash Expermental International) concept car including several major changes to make them more friendly to women. They went head to head with the VW but were faster and about 100 dollars more expensive. The most valuable ones are the first few that were badged with NKI Custom instead of Metropolitan badges but most of those were rebadged at the dealer. \n \nCouple of oddities of this little Metro. The bulls eye steering wheel badge indicates a Hudson Metropolitan while the grill design (minus the Harley Logo) indicates a earlier Nash design being a standard 57 it should have an AM logo and IIRC a horizonal bar. The late VIN (Post E21008) indicates this is actually an \"American Motors Metropolitan\" not a Nash or a Hudson. Also a couple of things. While the Radio was an option all of them came from the factory with one. Also IIRC the continental kit was standard. Also it would be nice to know if it has the high compression engine. It's really a crap shoot. VIN's for 57 went up to 5000's so this on could be right on the line for the running changes for the HC engine. Also I love the interior but it would have come stock with black and white pattern cloth with black and white vinyl trim. But this looks nice too. \n\nAnyway. This is a nice little metro. Would like to see the underside. These were unibody cars made in the UK so rust could be a serious structural issue so its important to get a good one. Parts for the mechanicals are easy to sort (shared with other BMC cars) so that is a plus. The bodies were built by one company and the mechanical components were built by Austin/BMC along with the final assembly then shipped back to the US. They were marked to women and to men to drive from home to the train station, the first cars marked towards the growing \"2 car families\"\n\nOne other oddity of all Metros. Also, mine had the bulls-eye emblem on the horn button so I'm not sure this was a Hudson Met. Mine was an AMC, anyway. The mesh grille came out in 1956 or 57, the earlier ones had the horizontal bar. \nOne thing you should pay particular attention to if you are looking to buy one. Look at the cowl vent. If there is a perfectly horizontal crease in it between the wipers, that means that the hood blew open and smacked back against the windshield. Ask me how I know. The hood latch and hinges are very flimsy affairs so watch for this. \n I skidded on a wet road in New Jersey and the engine started to fall out as the cross member in front had rusted away from the inner body. So for anybody wanting to get more horsepower into your Met, source an 1800cc engine from an MGB with or without the four speed floor shift gearbox. It's a simple installation, but does require some reworking of the floor. You can retain the twin S.U. carburetors or fit the Weber as is on this car. That will give you 50% more horsepower, the brakes and suspension are not really up to going much faster than the stock car.
