I sold it 12 years ago at 165K miles and still regret my stupidity in doing so. The paint was as perfect when sold as it was when new -- deep, pure, and mirrored. The original engine didn't make it much beyond 100K miles because low oil pressure at idle finally did its long term damage. You want to see over one bar oil pressure at warm idle on these I'd say. A photo of the gauges in those conditions should be provided. \n\nEven the most trivial visit to the repair shop eats up a $500 stack of bills, usually more. Do your own Fuel/oil/filter stuff. Simple and accessible.\n\nThese cars came from MBZ with V rated tires. This car has good H rated ones but the car's steering benefits from having the stiffer V's. Plus you can then make a run like ArgentoCarNut describes! Maybe not with the USA version -- mine never made it past 235kph though it tried twice. Anyway, too fast for H tires.\n\nGreat cars. Sadly, a lot of these cars have been neglected simply because of the cost of proper maintenance. Bit by bit it adds up and costs can soar. That said, these cars have bottomed out in the market and good low mileage examples are already beginning to command stronger prices. If you are in it to flip it or a cost vs. benefit type person, a neglected C126 is probably not for you. If you are in it for the pleasure and like to do some of the wrenching yourself and/or have the means to have it done, then a neglected one can reap some personal rewards. Beware of rust along the bottom of the rear window seal. Check in the trunk, up under lip where the trunk lid meets the body. There are a series of holes. Look inside with a flashlight. If there is any indication of rust then further investigation is warranted before buying. In addition to timing chain guides, one of the more critical parts to replace are the cam oiler tube fittings. These perish more due to age than mileage. If they have not been done anytime in the past, do them now or look forward to expensive engine repairs in your future. These points aside, there is probably no finer 80's Mercedes to own. The late David E.
