The exedy racing clutch does make it a little difficult to start up a hill from a dead stop. But other than that it will cruse at 25mph quite nicely. Great way to run around the country side, getting sunlight in the face and then the cool air as you dip into the valleys. It also has an amazing unobstructed view of the stars at night. The headlights are set far enough back that in the dark the whole inside of the car glows. \n\nBut the loud pedal does require discipline. It takes a good solid lap on a track to get the tires to temp. They never get warm enough on the street to be driving at 10/10ths. There is no traction control. If you slam the pedal down it will spin you 180 degrees before you know it. \n\nBut I've done fine with it just respecting its potential. Believe me, 1/2 throttle still scares the crap out of the average passenger. No one expects what it really feels like especially when you get the blast of air in the face and the scream of the engine. The ground is visible a few inches away. The tires and suspension are right there to the sides. And the engine... the glorious engine... is just inches from your head. So when you drop the hammer, the feeling is of sudden G forces and massive wind in your face. It is probably like what sport bike drivers feel except that you are much closer to the ground. It's like a low riding sport bike that can take turns at >1G \n\nWhat you dont expect is the sound of having an engine right behind your head. The wine of the supercharger is hard to describe. It is as if someone holding a megaphone inches from your head started screaming as loud as they possible could. It is a scream of anger, pleasure and pure terror simultaneously. If dragons existed, this is the sound they would make. It is pure visceral banshee scream straight from hell. The sound is horrifying and exhilarating at the same time. It really does cause a weird visceral response to hear something like that so close to your head. \n\nBugs immediately start pelting your face and get in your mouth because you cant stop smiling. But you dont care and smile even more when a bug hits you. Then you go around a corner and the tires pick up loose gravel flicking it directly into your chest and face (since the sides are wide open). Normally, having rocks thrown in your face is a bad thing, but in this case you just scream in joy and beg for more. People pull over who see you coming. The Eaton superchargers are affectionately known as \"HEATon's\" So the car would pull timing when on the track and loose power to prevent knocking. There were a few solutions to fix it and at the time turbo was the best way to go. The small intercooler in the hoop of my Atom reduces the charge temps dramatically. When doing dyno runs when tuning after 20-30 runs with just a fan blowing on it the air temps after the intercooler were still only around 90F. I didnt really need the water injection kit to cool it down further as we were anticipating. \n\nAlso, ffter a few years of driving it you do get used to the power. You can even tell the different when you have a passenger on board. So it's an addiction, once you get used to the acceleration, you want more to give you back that first rush you had the first time you drove. \n\nBut my turbo conversion was mostly dont because the car was already a bit passed its limit when I got it. Now it is under potential. I never did find out how much power we could get out of it running 20-22 lbs of boost and the methanol injection kit running. But it is built for it. The fuel system and injectors will handle it, the exedy clutch will handle it, the bigger tires will certainly help. They sold Honda K20-powered, normally aspirated stripped (!) Atoms for track-use only. Series started with about twenty cars and was strong for a couple of years before fading. The quality of drivers was variable but a few had substantial racing experience in a variety of race cars (in my case ranging from Formula Ford up to Indy Lights cars). I can say without hesitation that the Atom is a difficult car to drive quickly. Wheelbase is short, and center of gravity is high in race-car terms. On the cornering limit the car does not communicate well (determined by springs, shocks, suspension geometry). Good cars will tap you on the shoulder and shout \"hey, easy there, if you do more of that - throttle or brake or steering - I'm going to spin\". Bad ones don't shout, they whisper, thereby requiring much more concentration/sensitivity and seat-time to master. Now it was a spec series, so we could not change shock package or tire, but we did run data tests with various shock settings, tire pressures, springs and geometry. Nothing was especially helpful, the snappiness was just inherent to the platform. So to my point : whoever buys this car - or any Atom - be careful. If the car is regularly catching out experienced race drivers on a billiard table smooth race track like VIR anyone driving it on the street should ease into it rreeeaaallll slow. The point of no return may be closer than you think, and the car may keep telling you it's OK to pile it on until that point is well behind you. If you want to drive it fast sign up for track days, install a data system, hire a professional coach, build speed slowly, enjoy the feeling of mastering a difficult challenge in an environment where a mistake is usually harmless. Nothing is more rewarding than driving a real race car - and this is close - fast. I'd probably say that since the GM bailout, Honda is going to have more fanboys and better aftermarket support. \n\nIt is disappointing what GM did with the ecotec. At the reported 2130 miles, I bet his exhaust sounds like a tin can with rocks in it (not to put down that car, but most of us had problems with that exhaust). \n\nI believe brammo finally upgraded the rod ends in that year car. The ones that came with the early car where pretty cheep and did not last long. That I why I upgraded mine to the Aurora race grade ones and added the palatov pushrods which are much stronger.\n\nIt does have the advantage of being registered in California. You use the clutch pedal as usual every shift and just use the corresponding up shift paddle or down shift button. \n\nHonestly, it is the one gimmicky part of the car but I like it. The paddles activate a mechanism that shifts the regular H pattern shift levers on the transmission. It has some nice feature though. It does wait for the clutch pedal to be depressed. You can pre-shift (hit the paddle to up shift and it waits until you depress the clutch pedal). You can skip gears (go from 4th to 1st by hitting the downshift button 3 times and pushing the clutch pedal once). You can go right to neutral if needed. It also does shift very fast through the gears. \n\nMine is set up so it can be disconnected when you take the steering wheel off. Great theft deterrent if you leave it in gear and take the steering wheel with paddles with you. \n\nThe shift pattern can be finely tuned. The only Atom resale that I know of for less than $40K in the last few years (not the Spec Race Atom (SRA)) was an estate sale.
