The front floor is gone, the rockers are not good and who knows what is hiding under the white paint. Too bad, Carolina blue was a really nice color. 1973 was the first year for factory applied rustproofing in these cars, and for that reason the bottom of the doors are still pretty good. The rust on the suspension is pretty serious, those rear springs look really sketchy.\r\nThe front sheet is pushed in, and the front bumper is missing its rubber spacers to make it a 5 mph compliant bumper. The seats are not done correctly, they should be brown like the door panels and have a slightly different pattern. There is no battery in the car in the pictures, does it come with one, and is it driveable? For a car that was only driven in the summer, why is there a snow brush / ice scraper in the rear seat floor?\r\nThe miles are probably correct, and this car still has most of its original parts. It is cheap to buy, never appreciates all that much, and delivers a bundle of pleasure. It has a low cost of entry so that it excludes nobody from being able to buy it, and it's low appreciation means that people \"drive it like crazy\" because there is no economic reason to baby it. The parts are widely available (assuming that you accept the concept of the \"world-wide-web\" when it comes to ordering). The engine revs like crazy, gives a thrill even when in stock tune, and handles like no other classic car (excepting an Alpine 110) on a narrow dirt road. To get an idea of the thrills on on offer, just look up Saab 96 Swedish Rallies on youtube. \r\n\r\nHaving purchased half a dozen Saab 96's over the past couple of years, I have 3 words of advice: body, body, body (to paraphrase from the real estate world). A rotting body is expensive to fix (unless you have welding skills and a lot of time on your hands). The mechanicals are easy to source (I just purchased two old rotting sonnets with rebuildable running gear for $1000 each), and easily rebuilt. The only objectionably expensive part to my mind is the clutch assembly (for some strange reason). I was even able to purchase a complete NOS Saab Rally Sport and Rally engine on eBay last year.\r\n\r\nGenerally speaking, you can pick up a nicely bodied 96 (meaning hardly any rust issues except for surface rust) for $3000 to $5000. The cars tend to be found on the West Coast and New England. And as you can see from this New Engand example, rust is a serious issue. That said, I would steer clear of this example unless you have the above mentioned time and skills.\r\n\r\nOne other bit of advice for Saab 96 owners. Pick up a pair of Honda Prelude or Civic SI Recaro style seats (from late 90's). They are easily adapted to fit, and they keep you snugly in place when having driving fantasies of being Erik Carlsson (check out \"Erik on the roof\") or Stig Blomqvist (check out his youtube video on how he approaches corners when driving a rally car). Blomqvist (born in 1946) was a star rally car driver in the early to late 70's. As an interesting aside, he won the 2009 Carrera Panamericana in 2009 in rented Studebaker Carrera car prepped by Mats Hammarlund Racing in San Miguel Allende. If you do the math, Bomqvist drove the race for the first time when he was 63 and won! I still carry a full mental map of their structure. This one has survived well but will be quite difficult to bring back due to the rust. To make this car safe to drive, the power unit needs to come out, the front and rear suspension too, and the seam between the cab and the engine room checked and welded as needed. Ditto for the joints between the wheel houses and the longitudinal side beams that really keep the entire car together, and the cross beam under the front seats. I love these 96s but I would regard this as a temporary local driver and, except for the unbelievably committed and perseverant owner, a parts source for another with a rust-free shell. Treating the many corrosion issues here including the insides of the aforementioned beams, and installing new suspension, brake and electrical components where needed would be vastly expensive. We also don't really know the condition of the engine or transaxle, the latter of which is typically weak. On the plus side, if someone really wanted to, the work could be done. And by '73, Saab was ventilating and rustproofing the front and rear spring towers and shock mounts, so at least those are not gone. But looking through the photos, I see an admirable survivor 96 that needs just about everything. I can't understand why anyone would paint the outside of the car white in place of that very handsome blue that so flatters these. In fact, nearly every panel of a 96 aside from the fenders, doors, hood and trunk lid is the frame. The car is built with a self-supporting body that includes the side rails, cross rails, 3-way weld seam at the base of the firewall, wheel houses, the roof and the floor. Everything works to support everything else, so it's important to really know the condition of those main elements. What I see is rust-through of the main side rails and the jacking points. It would be likely therefore that the firewall weld is also rusted. These items can be fixed by a skilled and persevering person. It's not out of the question at all, but can be difficult, time-consuming and expensive. I'm a 96 lover, aware of the car's strengths and pitfalls. I think this car is priced about right in today's somewhat inflated market. It will need quite a bit of work to have a good long term future. Not sure why but I figured everyone here during this auction over 5 years ago deserves an update (or what there is of it so far LOL). After winning the auction, we proceeded to have a shipper arrange to pick up this Saab. Unfortunately, the barn (yes a barn) was located at the end of an unplowed country road. The barn itself was also located about 50 yards down what could be called a driveway which was also unplowed. There was no way to get the car out. So we waited until the end of April. Unfortunately, \"Mud Season\" does not end until round about the end of May. Finally, about the first week of June the car was ready to be picked up. It would not start of course but the truck driver and a friend of the seller were able to push it out and slowly pull it up onto the flatbed. We decided to 1. Get the \"Saab\" running and then tackle the rust repair first. We contacted a gentleman in New Hampshire who wishes to remain anonymous. He agreed to get it running and then start in on the reconstruction. That term is more apt then restoration given the extent of the rust. He was working on other projects but by the end of the summer had it running and actually took it for a 5 mile drive. He said given the extent of the rust it may have been one of the stupidest things he has done. Basically, the car was in danger of collapsing in the middle leaving him driving a V down the road with the center of the car scrapping along the pavement. Once it was running he brought it back to his garage knowing that it could not simply be put on a lift. I told him go ahead, what's the worst that could happen, you could have the lift in the air with both ends of the car lying at either end of the lift? Just kidding. Just kidding. So basically he constructed a jig on the lift to get it up in the air. After that, there were many, many fits and starts. Dealing with 15 other cars in various stages of restoration here in South Florida and in Philadelphia, my brother and I did not care. In fact, we really did not want to get too heavy into it until we thinned the herd. He became side tracked with other projects so we were now into mid 2019. In the second half of 2019 cutting and measuring began. To say it has been extensive is the understatement of the last 5 years. Basically, anything metal from the firewall to the trunk not including the roof, the B pillars or the doors had to be measured, cut, measured again, and cut more. In late 2019 into \r\n2020 he was fabricating section. There are a couple guys out there who sell fabricated sections for the 96 but the rust was so extensive that it would have required fabricating sections to weld to those prefab sections. Our guys said \"I can do this!\" Words we always like to hear! For most of the sections he decided to actually make dies so sections could be stamped out in the future. He cut us a real break on time since he planned or plans to offer sections for sale in the future. This added time for our work to be completed but we thought \"hey, this will save us a small amount of money but, more importantly, this is really cool!\" If I can I will post some pictures here if BaT will let me. From mid 2020 through the end of last year, he has taken time off for other car projects and for other work he does. He and his brother design and manufacture log splitting machines and tree trimming machines for large heights and periodically travel to trade shows. He has continues to work on the car AND in October of last year, my brother and I traveled to the woods of New Hampshire, not too far from where we grew up, to spend the day with him. We DO NOT weld but under his close supervision did a little welding, something I had never done before (I don't know how much he had to go back and redo but he has been kind enough not to destroy our egos.) Finally, the reconstruction portion of the project will be complete by October. At this point, we have made the decision to move the car to 1 of 3 well known Saab guys where the engine will be pulled, modified and rebuilt to get it up to 150hp. Of course, all mechanical and electrical work will also be done. He shipped my brother the carpet which is in good condition although slightly faded and slightly worn on the drivers side. We steamed it out and it looks much better. We plan to keep it but replace it with a carpet set made using Kensington luxury wool specifically made for the 96 from Coverdale in the UK. The dash will probably have to be sent to Just Dashes in CA for a total restoration. As far as the paint and body is concerned, one quarter panel may have to be replaced. We are pulling everything, taking it down to bare metal and repainting it in its original Carolina Blue. Since we are not restoring to stock, we may add a slight metallic element to the paint. I should add that we took the hubcaps and had them highspeed polished to a mirror finish. I will see if I can post some photos of them. Finally, my brother lost his mind and bought original Ronal wheels here on BaT.
