It looks like a fan relay is missing or came off the bracket behind the passenger headlight. And, the battery fuse box is missing it's cover. It's missing an air hose on the side of the intake box, for muffling smog pump intake. All those parts are dealer available or easy to run down. Also looks like the annoying Accelerated-Warmup-System has been removed.\n\nNice list of labor and parts from RP. Looks like the turbo control solenoids are new, would assume the sequential system is well sorted. The dyno graph indicates as much and shows strong power for a stock-ish car. The Montego Blue Mica is the best color on these cars (perhaps a touch of bias here). It changes from a dark green/black in low light, to a blue/blue-green in direct sunlight. As you walk around it, the shades of blue change as the shadows move. Photographs can't seen to ever fully capture it. Pretty crazy to think that it was factory paint in the early 90's from Mazda, but then its crazy to think Mazda built this car at all! The Montego Blue goes to hell fast if not taken care of, and was pretty soft. My car wears original paint, and at 80k miles the rock chips on the front are excessive. A full repaint, so long as it was done well would be a selling point to me. \n\nThese cars, I feel, are one of the best kept secrets in the sports car world. An exotic, powerful engine. Timeless, stunning good looks. One of the best driver focused interior layouts. Perfectly balanced, intuitive handling. Mazda poured their heart and soul into this car, and let their engineers run wild. The entire car is quintessentially an analog driving experience, the sight of the tach revving to 8,000 effortlessly, the feel of the crisp shifter, the smell of the exhaust, but mostly: the sound of that wonderful engine and feeling of the second turbo coming online pushing you back in the seat while charging harder and harder to redline. I've yet to drive a car that matches the pure driving nirvana these old Mazda's give. A turbocharged aircooled 911 is the closest thing from my experience, yet there's no denying the Mazda is a better balanced car, at a fraction of the price.\n\n\nAs a mechanic by trade, with plenty of experience around a wide variety of European cars, I find the fear of the cost of ownership of the RX-7 to be quite exaggerated. The engine life of the FD engine is said to be, on average, 80k miles. However, when breaking the cost of ownership down, figure an engine rebuild costs $5k, and say its driven 5,000 miles a year, that's 16 years between rebuilds. The rest of the car is very well built, but with any old car there will be inevitably some issues, so the case could be made that the cost of ownership would average somewhere around $500-$750 per year. Those are numbers that many owners of older European cars can only wish for! In first hand experience having owned 7 rotary powered cars over the years, I have never had an engine blow up. I've owned the FD for four years, with the only issue being a faulty reverse light switch. If internet hype was true, every one of those cars should have exploded violently within hours of signing the title. \n\n\nTo the subject at hand here, this car has most of the right stuff already done. Given the quality of the factory paint, I would put a respray in the \"win\" category. A fresh rebuild, a clean interior, the common issues like the fuel pulsation dampener, wiring harness, radiator, and coolant surge tank have been addressed. The auto to manual conversion raises suspicions, but being professionally done shouldn't be an issue. \n\nMy questions for the seller(and apologies if I missed seeing some of this)\n-Had the car been sitting for years before being rebuilt? I am the seller and this is my first foray into a BAT auction. Let me do my best to answer all of the questions for which I have answers. First of which is: how did I get the car, why did I rebuild it, and why am I selling. I am a long term car nut and currently own 5 other collector cars (1988 Jag Hess and Eisenhardt XJS, 2001 Ferrari 456MGTA, 1974 Maserati Bora, 1984 Maserati QPIII and 1984 Aston Martin Lagonda. All of these are in various stages of reconditioning with the exception of the Ferrari which is a perfect 17k mile car and was my wife's 50th birthday present. Bottom line, I try to get all of my cars so that everything works and everything looks good. This was very original and had not been hit so i tried to keep that way. I went the 5speed router rather than automatic because I was told by RX 7 aficionados that the everyone wants a 5 speed. After driving it I understand why.\n\n1. I am a CPA and got the non-running car through a client. As with so many of these the Apex seals were history. I first tried to get a rebuilt engine from Ernest Borschet in Georgia. He sent me a defective unit and would not honor the guarantee, (even after I shipped the car to his shop) so $7,000 and two years later the car ended up in Garland Texas with Chris Ott. Chris has a great reputation and he did a superb job on the mechanical items. I have another client that owns a body shop and he did the paint work. I'm his CPA and we are still friends so that should tell you I'm happy with the quality of the paint. So he answer as to why sell The Mazda is three fold: 1. Too many cars for my garage and 2. It is best to sell while the rebuild is fresh. \n3. I thought I would use this car on a regular basis but truth be told, the ride is a bit harsh for a daily driver. I replaced every wear susceptible suspension component thinking that it might soften the ride but that was not the case. These cars are exceptional handlers but you pay a price. I'm 59 and I must admit i now prefer a softer suspension. \n\nAs far as the more technical questions I'm not an expert. I'll forward those to Chris Ott of Rotary Performance in Garland Texas as he did the rebuild. Once her responds I will post the answers. I have all of the details on the rebuild saved as PDFs and those are available to anyone who wishes to see them. \n\nSome additional answers in reverse of the order asked below:\n1. The drivers seat is in good shape and I'll add more detailed pictures. I did have my interior guy repair the outside bolster so it does not really show much wear.\n2. I believe the engine pan is now installed and will get a picture of the underside of the car posted.\n3. I ordered a second used gauge cluster and it will be included with the sale. You are correct, I had to use instruments from both and decided the leave automatic cluster installed as the base unit. I also have a few other spares including a window regulator.\n4. The invoice shows there was one installed. Look in the mouth of the bumper and see if there is a black plastic shelf at the bottom. If so, it is there.\r\n2.\tWere the rotor housings replaced during the rebuild? - No. The existing ones were well within spec. New rotor housings are about $900 each and everyone tries to avoid replacing them.\r\n3.\tAs previously mentioned, why is the vacuum chamber missing behind the alternator? - It's not a vacuum chamber, it's a boost accumulator. It's superfluous and unnecessary to the functionality of the twin turbo system. Only the RX7's had them. The Cosmo does not and it works just fine. It can be added back if someone wants.\r\n4.\tDoes the sequential system work properly? - Yes. It transitions at 4,000 rpm as per spec.\r\n5.\tHas the stock downpipe been replaced with a catless aftermarket piece? - I don't see any notes about the exhaust and I don't remember the specifics to it. It almost certainly has a downpipe, which eliminates the precat. The main cat is also likely there, otherwise it would not have passed the smog test. They can look under the car and it should be obvious.\r\n6.\tIt looks like a fan relay is missing or came off the bracket behind the passenger headlight. - The ground switching relay has been eliminated to make the fan motors work in high speed mode every time they are triggered on. This is a common change to add reliability to the cooling system.\r\n7.\tThe battery fuse box is missing it\u2019s cover. - I'm not surprised. Plastic covers go missing after 20+ years of existence. They are still available from Mazda.\r\n8.\tIt\u2019s missing an air hose on the side of the intake box, for muffling smog pump intake. All those parts are dealer available or easy to run down. - That part can likely be found used.\r\n9.\tAlso looks like the annoying Accelerated-Warmup-System has been removed. - We remove the accelerated warmup solenoid (under the intake manifold). That also removes the hose to the back of the throttle elbow. This is a common change. The car is deceptively fast because it is so quiet in stock trim. My other fun car (Italian) gives you lots of aural feedback to let you know just how fast things are going by. The rotary is just so smooth and quiet that it will surprise you. In fact, this is the only car that I have looped while out on a morning drive. I do not push the limits on public roads as too many bad things can happen too quickly; I just like to feel the cornering forces acting on me and the car. Early Sunday AM, quick left immediately followed by an off camber right-hander, more entry speed than I thought, the right gear, and a little heavy on the go pedal on exit and around she came. No harm, no foul, thankfully. Ever since, I tend to pay a little more attention to the speedo when out in this one.\n\nAny time I take mine to a C&C it will always get more attention than the Italian would.
