Mk2 GTIs and Golfs, starting with the 1988 model year, had that VW center emblem. There is an indentation in the rear panel for that emblem and it does not look right if the rear emblem is missing.\r\n\r\nSo they probably could not readily find a 1985-87 panel (which is smooth, and does not have the VW emblem).\r\n\r\nAlso, black Mk2 GTIs, like Black MK1 GTIs, did NOT have blackout tape surrounding the rear window. Which is good, because often the tape peels, tears, especially on older cars.\r\n\r\nYes, GTI bumpers had red trim. Those are Golf bumpers. I didn't even notice, and I obsess over these cars.\r\n\r\nThis car clearly led a good life, or has had a lot of difficult, expensive items replaced, which again, says it led a good life. Look at the fuel lines to the fuel filter next to the fuel tank, and the fuel lines from the fuel distributor; the rear torsion beam axle surface rust is very light. It's not something one replaces. Find a good auto upholstery shop and have the bolsters redone. The grey factory fabric may be hard to find--but it doesn't wear well anyway, so you can redo the bolsters in grey vinyl or leather or a tougher fabric that looks similar color from 5' away. That is what I did on my 3yr old 86 GTI, grey vinyl. The front seats didn't match, but the bolster held up, and it was much better than torn bolsters.\n\nI think these are very comfortable and supportive seats, BTW. And good for you for DRIVING your classic GTI. Just take good care of it (as you probably do, to get 300k out of it). These cars are blast, and unlike a Miata, you can carry passengers, or a LOT of stuff. Folks might think I'm purposely aiming for the ratrod look, but the reality is that my thin budget goes entirely toward keeping it mechanically sound. Passed emissions with flying colors last month, shiny paint will have to wait until more money falls out of the sky! These must have a cult following among the 20-somethings lately, as two separate guys about that age outside the grocery store and the AutoZone store went way out of their way within the last 6 months to say I had a great classic. The beam axle (and all 4 wheels) had been bent and the car crabbed. Found a junkyard axle in Wichita and installed it in the driveway. Problem fixed. Five easy hp just by advancing the ignition 6 degrees to 12 degrees BTDC. Sold that car in OKC in '00 when I was lucky enough to find a '92 16V 2.0L. Guy I sold it too never came back for the title. His Mercedes was in the shop and he needed a stop gap car to drive while his car was being fixed. I still have the title. He probably drove it to the big junkyard south of OKC when he was done with. Probably one of the most original 8V GTIs left on the planet. \r\n\r\nI drove one (my first new car) from December 1985 through mid-1989, bought a 16V 1989 model, then later, a big-bumper 1992 in Montana Green. These things were rare when new, and much rarer now, but just wonderful all-around cars. I drove the wheels off these things, and ran away from every car (Corvettes included) in the twisties in Northern Arizona. I also scared 911 drivers who came along to sit in my right seat.
