You can place that little lever wherever you want it at anytime and nothing happens until the clutch pedal meets the floorboard-so it's important to note that is in the gear you want. Were they vacuum operated, as stated in the BaT write-up, or electrically operated, as inferred in the comment by @aamccrary? In college I occasionally drove an old Chevy (1937?) owned by a farmer we worked for and it had a vacuum operated three on the tree. It was pre-selector only in the sense that you didn't re-engage the clutch until all of the hissing and clunking subsided below the floor. The one-two shift across the dog leg was particularly slow, cause and effect being only loosely related. I'm not inferring the Cord was like that, just that it's been a long time since I drove a vacuum shift.\n\nI also recall reading of the MG mechanics frustration when trying to teach Tazio Nuvolari how to use the ENV pre-selector gearbox in the MG K3. Apparently the language barrier kept him from immediately grasping that the actual gearshift happens later; imagine trying to do it just as @aamccrary succinctly explained to us but in a language you don't know. The gear lever selects the gear you want via an electrical circuit but the circuit is completed by the foot pedal. This is known as an 'Operating' pedal. There's no clutch, the pedal completes the circuit and the gear changes. This is why you can move the gear lever around at will and nothing happens; until you 'Operate'.\n\nSo you're driving along and want to change gear. You have selected the gear, you operate pedal, complete the circuit and the gear shifts. Now imagine you are driving along, the car is in gear, you operate pedal, complete the circuit, gear starts to shift and you move the gear lever into another gear! You have change gear circuits, the car thinks 'What the hell' and drops that gear and tries to grab another one. Recipe for disaster, if the gears have started to move you can easily jam something in the box.\n\nAs to driving I think pre-selectors are great. They brush up you driving skills, get you thinking about what you are doing, get you looking up the road, anticipating what you might need to be doing next and generally paying more attention to what is going own around you. When it comes to driving a car, how bad can that be? I wouldn't worry about pre-selecting a 'wrong' gear as driving situations can change and you might revise you decision. The car was very well known on the West Coast as it was really one of the first full nut and bolt restorations of a sedan at that time (late 70's) since all the effort and money went to the open Cords, even though the closed car (particularly the Westchester) was the most pure in design. It was also unique in it's subtle Cadet Gray livery as owners tended to choose the flashier colors (some were not factory correct) at that point in time. It was done to perfection, won many major awards and still looks terrific today. Not only does it look fantastic but it runs as good as it looks witnessed by flawlessly completing a week long CCCA Caravan through the Finger Lakes area of New York. He lost interest in his car companies and moved to the west coast after his first wife died in 1931. The group owned about 100 other companies including the precursor to American Airlines and Lycoming.\n\n@pjcseattle1: In regards to you dreaming of driving a Cord, and given that I live outside of Vancouver, B.C. which is only a few hours away from Seattle, you are welcome to visit and take a drive in one of my Cords during the summertime (assuming that you can figure out how to contact me via bringatrailer without me posting my contact information publicly).\n\n@wkinnney52: as mentioned, it is not in the interest of the seller to publicize the reserve. But given that these cars in good condition sell for anywhere from $125k to $200k, you have to figure that the reserve is north of $100k. \n\n@raffi: you posted that few cars left the factory with a supercharger. On the contrary, nearly 40% of all 812 models came with the supercharge (about 400 cars of the 1066 produced in 1937). I rather doubt that they were routinely added later unless they were salvaged from a wrecked or rotted out car. They were a $412 upgrade at the time which was a tidy sum in 1937, and represented 15% of the value of the car. (Finding a good Schwitzer-Cummins Cord supercharger today will generally set you back $15k to $20k.) \n\nIt is interesting to see a nicely done Cord come up for sale on Bringatrailer. Given that it is languishing around $50k with less than two days to go, I doubt that it will sell (but I would be delighted to be proved wrong). The challenge of buying a car like this sight unseen is not knowing the intimate details of the car, as they will greatly affect the value should you want to sell it on in the future. For classic cars such as this one, it would likely help the seller if he published a detailed valuation report (without the valuation price included of course) so that a purchaser could get a clearer sense of the true condition of the car. When I look at the pictures on this one, I see some areas of concern but the photographs are not detailed enough to know if the reflections are distorting things. For example, the fitment of the driver's door and the trunk appear to be off by a considerable amount. The rear rock guards look like they were produced by somebody who didn\u2019t know how they should follow the curve of the wheel arch. This may come across as nitpicking but the aluminum heads were never came polished from Cord. The wheel arches on the front fenders don\u2019t appear to flow smoothly on the curve. Of some concern in terms of valuation is the fact that supercharger pipes have been added to a car that didn\u2019t come with them. Also, I am surprised by the corrosion showing on the gauge rings and headlight turn handle. My take on the car is that $25k spent on a refresh could do a lot for it, and would pay off in the long run. For those wishing to speculate on Cord prices rising, only the very best presented cars, or the best sorted for driving will likely increase in value. Cord prices have been flat-lined for some time. That being said, they can make a great driver. I have a friend who will not hesitate to put 10,000 miles a year on his sedan, and another friend who was able to sell his Sportsman at at premium because it was so well sorted as a driver (he had driven from to the Northwest out to the ACD gathering in Indiana a couple of times with his wife as navigator). Yes, I saw the show and it is exactly the same tranny. In fact I had the very same problem that they did with a broken gear myself. The actual transmission is much like any other transmission but he gears are fragile and certain ones can be most difficult to find. Now, the rest of the vacuum/electric system is a whole different deal and can be frustrating but, again, the ACD Club has a treasure trove of information and those parts are available. Once the car is sorted out and used with some regularity-the more the better-they work very well. All of this was part of their downfall. So it's just relays & wiring, all of which can suffer from oxidation of the copper/brass connections and create intermittent problems. These can often easily be cleaned up by dipping them in Tarn-X from the drugstore/supermarket - it's for cleaning copper pots. A clear liquid - probably something like muriatic acid - it is poured into a suitable container - just enough to cover the metal wires/terminals or even complete switches. The consistency of water & looking identical, 2 min. immersion will usually clean off the oxidation just as it was designed for copper pots, followed by water rinse, & can do a marvelous job of restoring conductivity and prevent oxidation heating of electric joints. I've dunked whole interior light units with their plastic bases as complete units with multiple brass pieces/rivets/joints ,which would normally be impossible to strip of oxide, into small containers, rinse them, and had them work perfectly after the treatment. \nAnd if the vacuum motor diaphragms have become cracked/brittle/leaking, they can be made useable by removing them and coating them with PL roof and flashing urethane sealant from Home Despot for $4.50 a tube. A friend recently made the power brake booster diaphragm in his '58 Chrysler work again by coating it with this goo and letting it cure for 3 days. I've bonded Panhard engine mounts back together with the stuff, and they work in tension - not compression. Of course the description explains that it is not a S/C car in several places which helps ! It was fairly commonplace throughout the years that owners would opt to add the outside pipes to either suggest the car was S/C (when it wasn't) of just for the appearance. It's a matter of personal taste but those pipes were added by designer Alex Tremulis after the original designer, Gordon Buehrig left Auburn. His dislike of the pipes was well known as he felt it cluttered up the otherwise clean design. In today's collector car world I think we are all gravitating towards authenticity so I believe it is being done less and less. Not to mention the fact that it is irreversible and destroys a std. hood. There are several other clues that would lead one to believe it's not a true S/C car. 1. The (restamped) data tag shows the engine prefix 'FB' which is for a std car. 'FC' is correct for a S/C block. 2. Yes, those '36 810's that were unsold in the branches when the model year changed were renumbered and then assumed the '812' moniker. S/C was only available on '37 812 models. 3. There is no supercharger present. Beneath that std, barrel shaped air cleaner is a carb. 4.
