I became obsessed with the idea of owning an AMG station wagon, right when the W212 model (2010-2016) was just coming out, but still far too expensive for someone like me to own. That left the W211 model (2003-2009), but there was a problem: they only built 193 E55 AMG wagons (2005 and 2006) and 153 of these E63s (2007, 2008, and 2009). So I set up search alerts on every website and became tremendously diligent about finding one. The seller, in Indiana, listed this car on Autotrader and I walked out of a business meeting to call him immediately -- first among six other calls he claimed he got within an hour of listing it. With so much interest, I didn't have the leverage to request a PPI, and I purchased it sight-unseen in Indianapolis and drove it home to Atlanta.\n\nUpon arrival back home, I took it to the dealership and discovered that the prior owner -- who locked himself out of his own home as he was showing me the car -- had deferred tons of maintenance. I spent several thousand dollars getting it into what I deemed perfect condition, and I truly believe it was there (or very close) sometime in the fall of 2012. I even replaced the differential just because I heard the smallest whine!\n\nThen the accident happened. It remains the only accident I've ever had in a personal car, and of COURSE it had to happen with this one. I was sitting in the left lane at a red light in Atlanta, with drivers stopped in front of me and behind me. The driver in front of me was turning left, not going straight -- so he didn't immediately move when the light turned green, in order to allow traffic to proceed from the other direction. The driver behind me, in a Chevy Blazer, only noticed the green light and just started to drive forward, even though the cars in front of him weren't moving. He hit me -- and about 20 minutes later he was in the back of a police car, having been arrested for DUI. He couldn't have hit me at more than 5 miles per hour, but his bumper was high enough that it crunched the E63's tailgate, which I believe was replaced (possibly along with the bumper; I truly don't remember). I drove the car home with the damaged tailgate, and to the body shop afterwards; the damage wasn't severe, and I had the car back in about a week. The second \"accident\" was cosmetic and only required buffing, but Carfax is increasingly all-seeing.\n\nI sold the car to the current owner (this BaT seller) in the fall of 2012, and he was the single best car buyer I've ever dealt with -- reasonable, rational, and pleasant. He's kept in touch with me ever since, and I'll miss receiving regular updates about this car. I've owned 25 vehicles, and this is probably the one I get the most questions about when people meet me. To this day, there's a picture hanging on the wall directly above my dining room table from the time my friends and I took this car to the drag strip in rural North Georgia, where my friend Andrew rode in the rear-facing back seat, waving to all the cars we beat, until they made us stop because it was running too fast for passengers.\n\nLast summer, four years after selling this car, I happened upon another one of the 153 2007-2009 E63 AMG wagons parked on a quiet street in the tiny town of Southwest Harbor, Maine. I was awestruck, and I remembered how much I enjoyed this car -- and I briefly considered e-mailing the current owner (this BaT seller) to ask for mine back. Again, NONE of the M156s produced before June of 2010 have the updated bolts, it does not matter what platform or state of factory tune any of the previous engines are in. While the 4-matic handling, transmission (rev-matching paddle shifting!!!), and overall performance were mindblowing, it lacked a certain something in terms of soul. The cockpit always felt a little off and I never felt comfortable in the seats on a drive of any sort of distance. Plus, it was simply too \"nice\" of a car to use as a family wagon. It was by sheer luck that I happened into the opportunity to get the car at an extremely low basis (well below) market. After a year and a half I decided to sell it with 20,000 miles and turned a decent profit that I then rolled into a 2008 E63 Wagon.\n\nSo, I gave up AWD, next-gen body, and obscene acceleration and handling .... but I gained rear-facing seats, comfort, and still have plenty of power to put a grin on my face anytime I need it. With a debadging of the rear (sorry, I know this will make some people cringe) and a proper roof rack setup, this is a total sleeper now. At the lower cost basis it's a perfect compromise between the 911 I really want and the SUV I don't want at all.
