You would be better owning one of these if you wrench yourself, but if you get it set and don't drive it like you stole it, this car will give you many miles of trouble free driving on the cheap. Even with a Walbro 255 and 650cc injectors, I get really good gas mileage and range on a tank, and the stock parts (while likely ready for a good cleaning) tend to do better than that. It still revs smooth and easy. I kept in four wheel alignment. I changed the transmission and transfer fluids some years back and did regular oil changes. Brakes have been kept up. And to answer the question about OBD1 / 2 - all of the 2g Eclipses has OBD2, it debuted with the new generation model.\r\n\r\nMy dad bought a '95 GSX new back in January of 1995. It was the two-tone silver with a very-rare sunroof delete. My dad's 6'3\" and wanted the extra headroom. I still remember being 5 years old, woken up on a school night at what seemed to me like 4am (but was probably closer to 9pm) to go for a ride. He fit the whole family in, with my sister and I sprawling out comfortably in the tiny back seats (one of the reasons he got a 4-seater). It was quite a fun car to drive in. The car went through one engine around 100k miles due to some bearing failure which was an unfortunately common problem. The new engine blew a head gasket at 190k miles. At that point my dad ended up getting a '99 NSX to replace it, which he still owns, and I was allowed to drive the Eclipse. We put some crap in the coolant that looked like gravel/grit and sealed up the system for a solid 10k miles - enough time for me to learn to drive stick and have some fun my senior year of high school. Anyways my dad and I eventually decided to do a little backyard mechanic work and replaced the head gasket ourselves, which lasted another 15k miles until it blew one day as the boost was building under a WOT. I took it to a mechanic who specialized in DSMs and had them fix the head gasket and some other things. However, I was getting impatient waiting to get the car back and just to happened to have gotten my first 'adult' job out of college, so I had a local dealer sell me an '04 Z06 on a 5-year loan. They actually approved the loan on word of mouth and were hounding me for weeks to provide a paystub as proof of income.\r\n\r\nAs soon as I got my first paycheck I sent it over, and as soon as I got the Eclipse back from the mechanic, I listed it for sale. The car was in near-flawless condition and 100% stock, marked as a one-owner vehicle since the transfer between my dad and I was a family transfer. New timing belt, water pump, head gasket, blow off valve, no turbo shaft play. These turbo DSMs are awesome cars for the right person. Right person meaning one that adheres to the maintenance schedule for these cars; the most critical one being the timing belt and the balance shaft belt, both which need replaced every 60,000 miles. They also can't skimp on the cost and the quality of the parts and labor. Having done that, these turbo DSMs are very reliable and near bulletproof, as attested by this car. The same holds true even when they're properly modified. The key word being properly.\n\nAs the owner of both a first and second generation Eclipse GSX, I can agree with the others that said the build quality and materials of the first generation was far better than the second generation. These cars made quite a splash when they were introduced back in 1989, but their reputation suffered through the years mostly due to lack of maintenance from their owners and idiots that perform idiotic modifications, which is a shame because these turbo DSMs are very fast and fun cars to drive. \n\nAs for this particular car, the wheels were chromed at some point because this wheel style was never offered chromed from the factory. All of the faults listed in the article can be addressed with a little tinkering but the failing synchronizer will be a bit involved and the low oil pressure is a bit concerning.
