The safest thing to do do is abandon the auction until you can verify your notion through a Lotus Ltd. archive search, then there would be no confusion. These VIN plates can be bought blank. It seems odd that leaving out the \"26\" is in fact leaving out the 'model number'. The Lotus coupes begin with \"36\" and the electric window drop head convertibles begin with \"45\". I have studied Paul Robinshaw and Christopher Ross's excellent book on Lotus Elan's for at least 25 years. This will work out fine if these other number locations can provide support info. On the frame issue Elan frames weigh about 75 lbs. Most older 'driven' cars had a frame or 2 replaced. There are a few original frame cars around, but the frames are close to fragile. The replacement frames are S3 frames. S1 & S2 frames are no longer made. The difference between them is only 3 degrees in the camber. But you would not find supportive numbers if it has been replaced. I agree with Tom ( At least I think it is Tom that bought my old Elan Sprint) that in all my years I have never seen the \"26\" left off the VIN plate on an original VIN plate. Lots of them that were not original that are messed up in numerous ways. The dash has been replaced as there is not radio cutout. I dont recall (but I may be wrong) that i ever saw an Elan without that. There may be a VIN on the body right in the area of the right hand side near the bonnet latch. It is etched into the body there. Now to be honest, i don't recall if that was the case on S1 cars but I know on later cars it is there. I would suggest the seller gently scrape the area of the frame under the carbs, above the motor mount and bring up the chassis number if it is there. Without that, we really don't know what you have here. It is only for you own good. The car will sell for more with more info. Now saying all that there is essentially nothing bad about the car the way it is. It looks like and Elan, smells like and Elan and probably drives like an Elan. If it quacks, it is a duck sort of thing. This information issue is only going to bother someone that wants a guarantee of originality, something that was never important to me. It is a no reserve auction, so it is going to sell. Someone is going to get a car that for all intensive purposes sure does look like an Elan. There does not appear to be a \"26\" scratched on the plate under the bonnet, but it also could be just very faint. The \"3899\" is scratched in with an awl or other sharp tool and was tricky to see - I rubbed it with a crayon and wiped away the excess to get the number I got.\r\n\r\n@webco I don't believe the doors are a different color. I noticed it in one picture when you mentioned it, but I think it's because the reflection of the doors of the storage space where the car is located. In all my years of seeing this car, I've never noticed the doors being a different color. I'll try to get a couple pictures which confirm this on Friday. As for fitting, they've always been a bit tight - but it's been that way since I was 6 and my dad bought the car.\r\n\r\n@ByzaW definitely not. That damage happened in the 70's or something. It was purchased by a restorer as a basket case in Los Angeles. He had a tonneau (spelling?) cover custom made for the car and that will accompany the sale. It's cool, actually, because it can stay on the car and you can zip away just the driver's compartment. I was able to fix the throttle linkage, so it works, but by that point the battery was out of juice. It's the whole point of high octane, to allow an engine to have high compression without detonation. Your engine is not a high compression engine under high load. \nThe best thing you can do is to find find good high quality fuel without any ethanol blends with the lowest octane. Non-ethanol gasoline, often referred to as \u201cclear gas,\u201d or \u201cEthanol-free gasoline\u201d represents a unique fuel category entirely devoid of ethanol content. Apparently the CV system is much preferable due to its lack of coming apart suddenly while driving.\r\n\r\nIn addition to that upgrade, the tires were put on it by the same mechanic, so they have less than a mile of drive time total on them. \r\n\r\nBoth of the rails for the top are confirmed present.\r\n\r\n@Karter7, thanks for the story. I currently own a S3 Elan and was involved in the restoration of a very early Bourne-bodied S1 26/0045. This is a very honest, matching numbers car that would be a great project for either a restoration or just tidying it up and just driving it. There are tons of original, hard-to-source parts and the car is straight and together. Electrics haven't been hacked up, engine and head are original to the car, and look to have been recently rebuilt. Especially of note is the original resonator at the exhaust manifold exit, I've never seen an original one still attached to the car. Original cigarette lighter as well! \r\n\r\nWe felt around under the fender lips and there are no big blobs of filler or bad glass. Poking around under the carpet and inside the trunk revealed no accident damage or repairs that we could find. The front of the car was covered in woven cloth, which you can see in oblique light but will prevent stars in the body from rocks thrown up by the tires. \r\n\r\nThis is a significant car in that it's the Elan 1600 (S1) ever built, Car # 3900 was the first S2. \r\n\r\nOverall this is a very honest car, no stories, and is coming from long-term ownership by an enthusiast. Lotus famously used whatever they had around - the wire in the middle of the windshield is legitimately a bicycle spoke to tension the fiberglass - and as they shifted from S1 to S2, things got murky. This car has S1 taillights but an S2 full dash with a glovebox.\r\n\r\nI can't actually edit the listing, but I'm happy for BaT to do so. I wanted Mark to have this car, but we agreed it would be better if it went to somebody who would love it as much as me and it would be ok for him to sell it. I now live in a very small town in the mountains of Mexico. There are probably 50 speed bumps in this town and any one would destroy the Elan, so I left it with him. My ability to participate here is somewhat limited, but I wanted to add some comments.\r\nThose who commented the car is a Series 1 are absolutely correct, and the car is the last of that series. The gentleman who commented on the casual way parts were chosen at Lotus for cars between models confirms other things I have read and heard. I have seen Elans with VIN numbers more than a hundred less than this car which have the Series 2 style tail lights. Most Lotus people know this and other late Series 1 cars as Series one and a half because they have elements from the Series 2, like the dash on this car.\r\nThe doors are original. I had the car painted with the body off. The doors were painted months before the rest of the car, and I assumed he changed the paint color slightly. It bothered me, but not enough to make a fuss. The car was originally sold in Denver as a 1965 and was white. It was red when it came to me with black bumpers. Obviously, I changed the bumper color. A coat of very light woven fiberglass was added on parts of the body to avoid the \u201cstress cracks\u201d so common in Elan. Because the car was built in late September, 1964 (based on the serial number) I like to describe it as a 1964, but it is legally a \u201965.\r\nThe extra wheels which go with the car are the original steel wheels which were fitted to the car. The wooden ramps which will also go are surprisingly useful. I commonly parked it in the garage on the ramps to make it easier to get under the car. The metal ramps are too steep and high to use unless you put something like wood in front of them to lift the car before going up.\r\nWhen work was needed, I almost always preferred to stay with the original. The car was always fast enough for me in stock configuration. I finally decided the CV conversion was a good idea. The damage to the rear that wis mentioned was a result of a Rotoflex breaking and a stub axel flailing, breaking the bottom of the trunk. Jeff at JAE told me the car was in boxes for 7 years before Sgt. Rick bought it and restored it, which was the final reason I changed to the CVs. The block, head, radiator and carburetors were not changed.\r\nSomeone commented the wheel wells are slightly flared. That happened before I had the car, if ii is correct. I thought they were stock. The Pirelli Cinturato CA67s are 145 HR 13, which was correct for a stock Series 1. I replaced the tires for age, not wear. The spare is the same tire.\r\nAn Elan is best in the hands of an enthusiast who can work on the car. When I bought it, that was me. Jeff and Skip King in Carlsbad (who had at that time a Series 3 fixed head with more than 500,000 miles) walked me through many things and the Lotus community is remarkably helpful. Unfortunately, I have rheumatoid arthritis and my ability to turn a spanner (sorry, wrench) went to hell. As a result, the car spent a lot more time in my garage than on the road. \r\nForgive me, because I am old, but if you\u2019ve read this far you might like this. I first saw a Series 1 in the summer of 1964 in Southern California. It was love at first sight, and I have never stopped loving the car. Mark has a better memory than I, usually, but I never described the Lotus as a Series 2. Instead, I was very happy to have the very series I saw first. Mark was never very interested in cars, but he plays a wicked guitar.\r\nThe wheels which go with the car are the original Series 1 wheels and in fine condition. I liked the look of Minilites.\r\nThe water pump is the replacement produced for JAE and Dave Bean which is much easier to replace. I did not have an inspection of it, but never saw evidence of leakage.\r\nThere is also the operational part of the original scissors jack, although the handle is lost. A rachet works well.\r\nMark added the invoice from Mick Miller\u2019s shop for July of 2018 when I bought new bushings. All have been installed (along with the ones in the invoice from RDent) and the car has less than 100 miles after installation. I also got a new sway bar from EBAY. I also bought and replaced the bolts. The Elan suspension is softer than you might expect by design, and the bushes are important. I l think one bonnet spring is original, and the other is one of the pair I got.\r\nIf you buy the car, please give it a good home. A few comments: 1. The water pump is the newer style which is much easier to replace. 2. The doors are original. The car was painted with the frame off and the doors were painted some time before the rest of the car. The color is slightly different. 3. The bushes are important for an Elan, and I got them from Sue Miller (Mack's widow) because I thought they were the best quality. 4. Mark usually has a better memory than I, but I was always happy that I had a Series 1, the same series I saw first and caused me to love the car. 5. Mark was never a car guy, but he plays a wicked electric guitar, is a great choral conductor, and has a fantastic voice. 6. And that first drive may have been my 1st owned Elan. I've had several over the years, but now have three, an early pre-airflow FHC, my 1st Elan, bought in late 1974 and a S3 SE that I bought from the original owner's estate in 1984. The original owner had converted it to a 26R prior to 1972 and his widow told me of trips to Lotus Components where the 26R bits came from.\r\n\r\nBut the red coupe that Sports Car Graphic tested in 1965 won my heart.
