The clean bodywork and integrated (painted) bumpers, the engine does not have to come out for big service, and the interior is the most refined. \n\nLow mile examples are just as good as higher mile, well-cared for cars with the right service records. Reliability for cars that have been fully maintained is quite good. Home maintenance depends on your skill level. Belt service on a 4 cam along with valve adjustment is not for the inexperienced. This is still a timeless design which can not stay up (performance wise) with lesser modern cars. They do present a few challenges but nothing that can't be done in a home garage with a bit of skill and a decent set of tools.\n\nPerformance-wise they are fine, nice handling GT sports cars with a surprisingly good ride. It's not a race car and I don't know why people feel almost compulsively obligated to claim that they have lackluster performance. For normal, sane street use it does everything you'd want it to. The one challenge of working on these cars yourself is that Ferrari likes to secure some key components with special nuts that require a special (several hundred dollar) socket from Ferrari. Don't mind the fact that a Honda Accord has more BHP than this car. When people refer to the 3x8 family the 348 is not included, it's in the same family as the 355. But aesthetically the 308 is more popular and in fact there are people who will tell you the 308 is nicer than the 328 for simple things like toggle switches and levers instead of push buttons and the less generic, pointier overall shape. Those are subjective observations however and the truth is that, as time went on, Ferrari made more technically advanced cars. People may pan the 348 because the engine has to come out for belt service but the 348 has a sub-frame whereas the 3x8's do not so if a 308 engine has to come out it has to come out through the top which is a bit more of a hassle. I purchased used USA verison 328 mirrors (with no Ferrari logo) from Eurospares in England which were replaced by Ferrari New England. \n\nThe engine does not leak oil. The garage floor in unmarked. I owned one of those early Ferraris for 25 years...a \"lowly\" 250GT PF Coupe 2+2 (yes, that is the real name of the so-called 250GTE)...but it should be noted that the drive train and suspension are basically the same as the exotic and lovely 250GTO...which is why I bought it (it being the only front engined 3 liter Ferrari I could afford...though the price was the same as the swoopy 246GTB-the S was still out of reach and to me, with my lack of knowledge then, \"Ferrari\" meant 3 liter V 12).\n\nAnyway, the car was a kitten, but still had plenty of roar and would do over 140...not impressive today but this is with 1950s technology. It was so tractable you could (but should not) simply take your foot off the clutch without giving it any throttle at all and it would just motor off smoothly. \n\nParts were expensive of course, since we are talking about an old car (it was 16 when I got it) made in another country in very small numbers (954, though of course there were many more 3 liter motors and other mechanical bits). But maintenance was not an issue and I did all of it myself with a lot less in the way of tools than I have now. This included things like valve adjustments (all 24 of them)...which is no picnic as the throttle linkage runds right down the valve cover and is the first thing which has to be de-linked). I also did brake work, timing and points (it is timed as if it is two six cylinder motors), and replaced a broken overdriver switch (mine was a later Series III which gave the OD a separate oil supply and thus was not subject to the failures some early cars experienced).\n\nI had an oddity...it had electric windows, which I only saw on one other car. The mechanism wound stainless cable onto one side of a spool while it wound off the other side at the same time...terrible system and subject to the cable coming off the spool regularly. So I was inside the driver door panel more than I would like to admit.\n\nBut other than that? It did not overheat in traffic, would dawdle along at 40 all day, but was just as happy to wind the motor to past 7 grand and rip along at 100+.\n\nThe only real difficulty with 308s, IMO, is the transverse mid engine/drive train. Even something as like changing the spark plugs is an issue as one bank is inaccessible in the car. But to me they have retained a modern look that says pure Ferrari. They are quite lovely.\n\nLater Ferraris can indeed be fussy in terms of repairs. The latest generation much less so.
