This is brake-by-wire, brakes are controlled by a computer. The brake actuator has a finite life, measured in number of actuations. There was an extended warranty for the SBC because it was so problematic when these cars were new. They require computer to change brake pads, can also fail in spectacular fashion (a CLS500 nearly killed me because the brake system failed and locked up one corner while losing all braking on the other three). The 6.2L is an absolutely fantastic motor and the sound is intoxicating! \n\nMy biggest suggestion to any first time AMG buyers is BUY AN AFTERMARKET WARRANTY!!! It will cost you $3-5k depending (USAA or credit unions have the best warranties available) and will save you a ton of money in the long run. I got one for my 07 E63 with 34k miles 2 years ago for $3800 IIRC. However, I opted out of the added air suspension coverage which was a big mistake. My pano roof motor went out right after I got my car but before I got the warranty and was a $1200 repair so I highly encourage potential AMG buyers to get one immediately. About a week after removing the mid-muffler, I started getting the cam adjuster bang. Dealership quoted $5700 for the repair. I raised the BS flag as I knew there was a redesign. In the end, they covered the parts and I paid 1700 bucks for labor. I owed a 2001 E55 AMG for 10 years and put 190K miles on it until is was totaled. My last car was a mint condition 06 e55 in flint grey, bought it stock and went nuts with it. All the other comments seem to list the usual problems so I will skip over them but I will tell you about my personal experience. I had every possible mod you can do to that car without going inside the motor or trans from all the cooling upgrades to long tube headers to the stage 3 weistec supercharger kit and that car was a MONSTER. I owned it for the better part of 2 years and over 20k miles half of which were on the weistec blower. I drove it daily, I tracked it, I launched it on 16\" Mickey thompsons probably 100 times, took it on a 3k mile trip, roasted a set of tires monthly and did 70+mph rolling burnouts in it on a regular basis as well as multiple 200mph stints just because. That car handled so much \"spirited\" driving or as I call it \"got the living sh*t beaten out if it\" that I can't really think of anything else out there that could handle the same abuse. Mind you this was a car that was on a completely stock drivetrain with approximately 200whp over stock. I will list all the things that went wrong with it during my ownership until it was totaled. \r\n\r\n-drivers door handle keyless entry (new handle)\r\n-rear tires \r\n-more rear tires \r\n\r\nI abused her like a whore but took care of her as if I had given birth to her. IMO hands down the best amg in recent years. The 722.6 trans is definitely slow and sluggish but holy crap can it handle power, they are built to handle almost double the torque the car makes which is why the 911 turbo uses virtually the same transmission and it's known to be very robust. Stay away from pano roof cars as the roof is guaranteed to fail and tends to always squeak and rattle on the higher mileage cars.\r\n\r\nNow as far as the 211 e63 goes, great car but a little more fragile than the e55. Motor is a little more complex being that it's a quad cam v8 but the head bolts shouldn't really scare people away, they don't all fail like some people assume and when they do not all is lost, the job really isn't that difficult but I think people just assume so being that it's a Mercedes and an amg at that. The transmission on the other hand is definitely nicer than the 722.6 as far as shifting and drivability and comfort go but isn't nearly as strong. In fact I currently have an 08 e63 in the shop with a blown transmission and it's not a fun project but again they are older cars now and parts are available at reasonable prices so no need to break the bank at the dealer, plenty of small time shops including mine are happy to work on them at reasonable rates. Think WORLPAC for quality parts at realistic prices.\r\n\r\nWith all of that being said, it seems that the engineers that designed that era of Mercedes all decided to play a prank and put the ugliest steering wheels they had in their scrap pile on both the 55 and 63 but they did the rest of their job perfect. I'm clearly a bit biased but as stated above have plenty of experience with both cars and personally prefer the supercharger but also have a lot of appreciation for the 63 especially the wagons of both generations. This here seems like a great car that deserves to be driven but also garaged as they will only go up in value in the near future. I'm betting this will hit 40k and will be a bargain at that price a year from today. I was never fortunate enough to own a wagon but would definitely go out of my comfort zone financially speaking for the right e55 wagon and do it all over again. Don't be scared people, drive these things and drive them hard, they prefer it that way and will reward you for it. This car gorgeous in the color combo that it is and someone will definitely get an amazing highway monster.
